Omaha, Neb. ? Three Kansas women’s tennis players advanced Thursday to the Round of 32 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Assn. Central Regional Championships.
KU’s Cheryl Mallaiah, seeded 13th, routed Oklahoma’s Melissa Mendieta, 6-3, 6-0. Kansas’ Monica Sekulov, seeded 14th, beat Air Force’s Brooke Parsons, 6-2, 7-6 (5). And Courtney Steinbock, a KU freshman who reached the main draw with two qualifying-round wins Thursday, pounded Utah State’s Sarah Lowe, 6-1, 6-2.
Steinbock defeated Boise State’s Anna Oehme, 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6) and Colorado State’s Allison Lisle, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (6) to advance to the main draw.
KU freshman Emily Haylock beat New Mexico State’s Jenny Pettersson, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (7) before falling to Tulsa’s Marjolein Van Dongen, 7-5, 6-1, in qualifying.
The three Jayhawks still alive will play again today.
