Luke Axtell’s return means he’s sure to play the guitar for a third straight year at Late Night With Roy Williams.

Luke Axtell’s decision to return to Kansas University for his senior season is sure to please his teammates, who are quite fond of the 6-foot-10 Texan.

“The credit hours required under the satisfactory-progress regulation may be prorated at 12 units per term of actual attendance during an academic year in which a student misses a term or is unable to complete a term as a full-time student as a result of an injury or illness.”Such an exception may be granted only when circumstances clearly supported by appropriate medical documentation establish that a student-athlete is unable to attend a collegiate institution as a full-time student as a result of an incapacitating physical injury or illness involving the student-athlete or a member of the student-athlete’s immediate family. Credits earned by the student during the term to which the waiver applies may not be used in determining satisfactory progress.”

“I like Luke. He’s a great kid. We have a lot of stuff in common. He tunes my guitar,” KU center Eric Chenowith said jokingly in a recent interview.

Axtell and Chenowith both played the guitar at last year’s Late Night With Roy Williams. Axtell played a country song, Chenowith a heavy metal number.

“Luke’s gone through some tough, tough stuff and I’m happy to hear he’s feeling better,” Chenowith added. “Of course we’d like him back.”

Axtell, who left KU’s team after 20 games last season because of an undisclosed medical condition, has been treated and will return for his senior season, his mom, Mollie, told the Journal-World Wednesday night.

There was no comment on Axtell’s impending return from KU coaches, players or athletics department personnel Thursday. Head coach Roy Williams, who has been out of town the past several days, was on the road visiting KU signee DeShawn Stevenson in Fresno, Calif., and was not available for comment.

Last month, Williams said he fully expected Axtell to return for his senior season and that has happened.

Axtell passed a full load of coursework first semester at KU, but left campus to be treated in his hometown of Austin, Texas, most of the second semester.

Yet he is academically eligible to play ball for KU next season.

Rule 14.4.3.6 in the NCAA rulebook says the NCAA’s satisfactory progress rule may be waived in case of a medical absence.

Axtell has been working out in Austin, Texas with former Houston Rockets player Dave Jamerson. He’s not a former Rockets’ trainer as previously reported.
