Nebraska linebacker free on bond

? Nebraska linebacker Mark Vedral posted bond Monday and was released from jail as authorities considered whether to file sexual assault charges against him.

Vedral, who is accused of having sex with a woman while she slept, was released after posting $10,000 of a $100,000 bond. Lancaster County Judge Jack Lindner ordered Vedral not to have contact with the woman and to appear in court again Tuesday.

Vedral, 21, was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault. The woman told police she was asleep in the bed of Vedral’s roommate when Vedral began having sex with her, according to the arrest report. The woman was upset when she woke up and discovered it was Vedral, not his roommate, who was in bed with her, the report said.

Vedral, of Gregory, S.D., told police he stopped and left the room when the woman became upset and told him to stop, according to the report.

Vedral’s attorney, John Sohl of Wahoo, did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment left at his office Monday. There was no answer at Vedral’s home listing.

Nebraska coach Frank Solich said he planned to wait until Vedral’s case was resolved before commenting.

At the completion of spring football Vedral was moved from being a backup to sharing the No. 1 spot at weakside linebacker. He played in all 13 games last season as a reserve linebacker and member of the kickoff team. Vedral is the younger brother of two former Huskers, Jon and Mike.
