Waco, Texas ? Big 12 baseball leader Baylor completed a sweep of Kansas on Sunday with a 6-5 in the finale of a three-game series.
The Bears (39-13, 20-7 Big 12) survived four errors three by shortstop Jace Brewer which led to three unearned runs for the Jayhawks.
Kansas (22-26, 8-19 Big 12) took its first lead of the series in the second inning. Josh Scott walked leadoff batter Shane Wedd. When Brandon Smith followed with a grounder to shortstop, Brewer hesitated before attempting the force at second. Wedd was safe at second, and Preston Underdown’s throw to first went into the Kansas dugout, advancing Smith to second and scoring Wedd.
Two batters later, catcher Matt Oakes doubled to left to drive in Smith for a 2-1 Kansas advantage.
The Jayhawks led 4-3 entering the bottom of the sixth before the Bears answered with three runs on three hits in the sixth to take the lead for good. Kansas pushed one run across in the eighth off Kyle Edens (3-0), but Zane Carlson pitched his way out of the jam as the Jayhawks left the bases loaded.
Carlson earned his 13th save of the year and of his career, tying the Baylor career record.
Next for KU is a road game at Texas-Arlington on Tuesday.
The Jayhawks will play at Kansas State later this week.
