Four appearances on ESPN’s Big Monday.
One trip to New York’s Madison Square Garden.
One home non-conference game against Tulsa and three non-conference road contests versus Wake Forest, Ohio State and DePaul highlight Kansas University’s 2000-2001 men’s basketball schedule announced Tuesday.
The Jayhawks will play a home Big Monday game against Iowa State on Feb. 5, to go with road outings versus Colorado (Jan. 22), Missouri (Jan. 29) and Baylor (Feb. 12).
NCAA Elite Eight team Tulsa will invade Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 16 in a game scheduled on ESPN. KU visits Wake Forest on Dec. 7 (ESPN), DePaul (Dec. 12, ESPN), Ohio State (Dec. 23 (CBS).
Also, KU will play in the Coaches v. Cancer Tournament on Nov. 9-10 in Madison Square Garden. Other teams involved are UCLA, Kentucky and St. John’s. Media reports out of Los Angeles indicate KU will play UCLA, but there has been no official confirmation.
“I think we have assembled a schedule which will be both challenging and entertaining,” coach Roy Williams said. “Anytime you get a chance to face such prominent schools in the non-conference portion of the schedule, it benefits the coaches, the players and the fans.”
The Jayhawks will open with a pair of exhibition games in Allen Fieldhouse against the EA Sports California All-Stars on Nov. 1 and NCAA Div. II Emporia State on Nov. 4. A new NCAA rule allows schools to play Div. II schools in exhibitions, rather than AAU teams.
Five straight home games await the Jayhawks upon their return from New York and the season-opening tourney. KU will play host to North Dakota (Nov. 17), Boise State (Nov. 20), Washburn (Nov. 25), Middle Tennessee State (Nov. 27) and Illinois State (Nov. 30).
Two of those five foes North Dakota and Illinois State will face the Jayhawks for the first time.
The Tulsa game will match KU coach Williams against first-year UT coach Buzz Peterson. Peterson played for North Carolina when Williams was an aide with the Tar Heels.
Senior Kenny Gregory will have an opportunity to play in front of friends and family on Dec. 23, as Kansas heads to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, for a nationally televised game against Ohio State.
Rounding out the Jayhawks’ non-conference slate is a Dec. 30 game against Southwest Missouri State in the Sprint Shootout in Kemper Arena.
Along with the ESPN contests, KU has five other nationally televised Big 12 games at Oklahoma on ABC on Jan. 13, against Texas on CBS on Feb. 3, at Iowa State on CBS on Feb. 17 and against Missouri on CBS on March 4.
The Jayhawks will play on ESPN at least nine times, on CBS at least four times and on ABC twice.
