UNC fans site says Williams leaving Kansas

The Roy Williams rumor mill is in full force.

Goheels.com, an Internet site for North Carolina sports fans, reported late Sunday night that Roy Williams will become the Tar Heels’ new head coach today.

Goheels.com reported that “sources in Lawrence” say a team meeting has been set for this morning, during which Williams “will presumably tell the Jayhawks he is leaving to coach at his alma mater.”

However, the bulk of KU’s basketball players are not on campus.

Bob Chenowith, father of KU’s Eric Chenowith, reported late Sunday night from Orange, Calif., that Eric, who has returned home, knew nothing of a team meeting, and that the family had not heard from Williams.

Williams promised Friday that his players would be the first to know his decision.

Also, according to Goheels.com, UNC athletics director Dick Baddour “apparently traveled to South Carolina on Sunday to talk to Williams, who has a beach home at Wild Dunes resort.”

Further, the website claimed “a press conference will be called for late Monday in Chapel Hill where Williams will be introduced as the successor to Bill Guthridge.”

However, Williams also said on Friday that he would return to Lawrence and talk to KU chancellor Robert Hemenway and athletics director Bob Frederick before he made his decision.

As of Sunday evening, Frederick said he had not heard from Williams.
