Johnnie Watkins, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound cornerback from Kirkwood, Mo., has given Kansas University’s football team a nonbinding oral commitment.
Watkins, rated as the top corner in the region by online recruiting service MoKan Football, picked KU over Illinois and Missouri.
“I woke up this morning and felt Kansas was the best place for me,” Watkins told MoKan. “They stuck with me and they were the first school to call me the day after I got injured and told me they were still going to recruit me.”
Watkins suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury early in his senior season. At the time, he had been receiving interest from KU, Missouri, Colorado, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa. After the injury, interest dropped, but Illinois wanted him to visit this weekend, and Missouri still was in the picture.
