Derrick Ming, a 5-foot-11, 235-pound fullback-linebacker from Webster Groves, Mo., has given Kansas University’s football team a nonbinding oral commitment.
“I was sitting at a drive-through getting a pizza with my girlfriend and I looked into the rear-view mirror,” Ming told online recruting service MoKan Football. “For a quick second I saw myself in a KU uniform.”
Ming picked KU over Missouri, Iowa and Arkansas State.
“Missouri has a new coach and Arkansas State didn’t compare to the Big 12,” Ming said. “Iowa wanted me to come in for a visit. I just feel KU has a better chance at a bowl game in the next couple years.”
As a senior, Ming an all-St. Louis metro pick rushed for 1,400 yards and 19 touchdowns and had 70 tackles and six sacks. He was an all-conference pick at both positions and a second-team all-stater.
He is the eighth player known to have committed to KU, joining: Greg Heaggans, a 6-1, 185, wide receiver from KC Schlagle; Banks Floodman, a 6-3, 195-pound safety/tailback from Wichita Collegiate; Anthony Brown, a 6-1, 205-pound linebacker from Grandview (Mo.) High; DeShawn Spivey, a 6-3, 225-pound defensive end from Kansas City Washington; Ted Sims, a 6-1, 205-pound linebacker from Newton High; John Harvey, a 6-6, 305-pound offensive lineman from Mesa (Ariz.) Community College; and Justin Henry, a 6-4, 235-pound linebacker from Hoyt Royal Valley High.
