Greg Heaggans, a high school quarterback who projects to wide receiver in college, has given Kansas University’s football team a nonbinding oral commitment.
Heaggans, a 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from Kansas City Schlagle High, committed to KU on Sunday.
Regarded as one of the top prospects in the state by online recruiting service MoKan Football, Heaggans played quarterback and defensive back for Schlagle. In Schlagle’s option offense, he rushed for 1,325 yards and 13 touchdowns, and passed for 726 yards and seven touchdowns. He was voted to two different All-Metro teams, one for offense and one for defense.
“I felt comfortable with the coaches, and it’s close to home,” Heaggans said. “I like the environment. It seems like a nice place to be.”
Heaggans made his official visit late last month. He was supposed to visit Iowa this weekend, MoKan reported, but bad weather postponed that trip. MoKan also reported that Notre Dame was to pay Heaggans a visit today, and he had a visit to South Bend, I0nd., scheduled for Jan. 19.
“I’m not going anywhere else,” Heaggans said. “I’m done. I’m glad it’s finally over.”
Heaggans unofficially visited Purdue, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas State and had official offers from KU, Iowa and Northwestern.
“I went on unofficial visits to Kansas State, Missouri, Purdue, and Nebraska,” Heaggans told MoKan Football.
“Then I went on an official visit to Kansas and I had not really seen them. On my official visit there I got the feeling that is where I wanted to play. I got a feeling that I didn’t get when I went to the other schools.”
Though he spent his high school career in the offensive and defensive backfields, Heaggans didn’t expect difficulty moving to wide receiver.
“I’ll be a wide receiver,” Heaggans said. “I’ll be a possession receiver on slant routes and reverses. That’s fine with me. I see myself as a wide receiver in college.”
Heaggans, who also plays basketball and runs track, said he has been timed as fast as 4.49 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
Heaggans said he already had met NCAA initial-eligibility guidelines.
He is the seventh player known to have committed to KU, joining: Banks Floodman, a 6-3, 195-pound safety/tailback from Wichita Collegiate; Anthony Brown, a 6-1, 205-pound linebacker from Grandview (Mo.) High; DeShawn Spivey, a 6-3, 225-pound defensive end from Kansas City Washington; Ted Sims, a 6-1, 205-pound linebacker from Newton High; John Harvey, a 6-6, 305-pound offensive lineman from Mesa (Ariz.) Community College; and Justin Henry, a 6-4, 235-pound linebacker from Hoyt Royal Valley High.
