? Senior midfielder Meghann Haven scored two goals and junior forward Natalie Hoogveld scored one, leading Kansas University to a 3-0 women’s soccer victory over Northwestern on Friday.

“We played very well in the first half and created a lot of chances,” KU coach Mark Francis said following the opener. “Our finishing was good compared to the number of shots we took, and the chances we didn’t put away didn’t miss the target by much.”

The Jayhawks (1-0) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when Hoogveld scored off an assist from senior forward Hilla Rantala.

Kansas struck again just before halftime as Haven pounced on a ball in the box and found the back of the net. Senior midfielder Colleen Colvin was credited with an assist.

In the 77th minute, Haven unleashed a long-range shot for her second goal. Junior midfielder Melanie Schroeder provided the assist.

“We came out a little lax in the second half,” Francis said. “We picked it up in the last 25 minutes and dominated the game again as we did in the first half. We gave up only one clear scoring chance and did very well defensively.”

KU sophomore goalie Layla Young made two saves and earned her first collegiate shutout.

The Jayhawks will play at 2 p.m. Sunday against Illinois in Champaign, Ill.
