Kansas University javelin throwers Scott Russell and Andrea Bulat earned a gold and silver medal respectively at the Canadian Olympic track and field trials last weekend in Victoria, B.C.
Both Jayhawks failed to qualify for the Sydney Olympics, however, because their throws were under the required standards.
Russell, a 6-foot-9, 275-pound senior from Windsor, Ontario, tossed the spear 249-1 in Victoria, but was almost 20 feet short of the Olympics standard.
Bulat, a 5-8 junior from Windsor, Ontario, recorded a toss of 160-9 in the women’s competition.
At last spring’s Big 12 Outdoor championships, Russell was first with a toss of 240-3 while Bulat finished third in her event with a throw of 157-9.
Dallas Kansas is listed in the No. 6 slot in the Big 12 Conference soccer coaches preseason poll. Nebraska was predicted to repeat as champion with 10 first-place votes from the 11 league coaches.
Texas A&M received the other first-place vote and was second in the poll followed by Missouri, Texas, Baylor, KU, Colorado, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
Kansas State does not have a soccer program.
No Jayhawks were listed on the preseason all-conference team.
Indianapolis – Former Kansas swimmer Tyler Painter placed sixth in the 1,500 freestyle finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Painter finished in 15:22.58. The top two swimmers made the U.S. Olympic team. Eric Vendt was winner in 14:59.11.
Painter is KU record-holder in both the 500 and 1650 freestyle. A four-time All-American at Kansas, Painter swam for the Jayhawks
KU sophomore Brian Soria (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) placed 40th of 69 swimmers in the 1,500 prelims in 16:06.54.
Junior Carrie Kirkham (Houston, Texas) placed 60th of 98 in the 50 freestyle prelims in 27.07. Student assistant coach Drew Dischinger, who swam four seasons at KU, saw placed 90th in the 100 fly in 58.08.
