Two blue chip high school basketball players from California are expected to attend Late Night With Roy Williams on Oct. 13 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Jamal Sampson, a 6-foot-11, 245-pound center from Santa Ana, Calif., said Friday both he and Josh Childress, 6-6 from Lakewood, Calif., will make their official campus visits for KU’s season-opening basketball practice.

“We’re just going to come down, have some fun and see what it is like at Kansas,” Sampson said.

Sampson is also considering Connecticut and will visit the Huskies’ campus on Sept. 15. Also, UCLA, Syracuse, Virginia, North Carolina and Saint Louis remain candidates.

He said playing time will be a factor in his decision, and KU will have some of that to offer after the graduation of center Eric Chenowith.

A good buddy of Sampson, Childress is considering KU, Arizona, UCLA, Stanford, North Carolina and UConn.

Leavenworth’s Wayne Simien, who has verbally committed to KU, will visit Sept. 15. Jeff Hawkins, 5-11 of KC Sumner and Jamar Howard, 6-5 of SM Miege, are to visit Oct. 7.

Kansas athletics director Bob Frederick has been named to a prestigious 16-person basketball issues committee that will tackle the issue of summer recruiting.

The committee will include head coaches Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Tubby Smith (Kentucky), Ernie Kent (Oregon), Lorenzo Romar (Saint Louis) and Phil Matthews (San Francisco).

Other members are Syracuse chancellor Buzz Shaw, Big 10 athletics director Jim Delaney, Butler AD John Parry, Big Sky commissioner Doug Fullerton, Penn athletics director Steven Bilsky, Southern athletics director Floyd Kerr, Mid-Continent commissioner Jon Steinbrecher and Tulsa president Bob Lawless.
