Josh McCown may become a quarterback of reknown this fall.
McCown is an SMU junior, a 6-foot-3, 205-pounder from Jacksonville, Texas, who came into his own late last season when the Mustangs won four of their last five outings.
McCown continued to impress by completing 12 of 25 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown in the spring game.
“I think we set the tone for an offense that’s going to be really, really productive in the fall,” McCown said.
It would appear fourth-year coach Mike Cavan won’t have to worry about McCown suffering an injury, either, because freshman quarterback Kelan Luker was even more impressive in the spring game.
Luker completed 20 of 28 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns.
New offensive coordinator Larry Kueck is an exponent of the wide-open one-back attack, meaning the Ponies will throw, throw, throw.
Among the pass-catching weapons are Chris Cunningham, Johnnie Freeman, Bryan McDearman, Marcus Carter, Cody Cardwell and Ryan Riddle.
McDearman caught 10 passes in the spring game.
SMU also has four solid tight ends in John Hampton, Michael Brown, David Ellen and Steve O’Neill.
In 1999, SMU opened with five consecutive losses, including a 27-9 decision at Kansas. McCown completed 15 of 30 passes against the Jayhawks for 190 yards and a touchdown.
SMU will inaugurate its new stadium when it meets Kansas on Sept. 2 in Dallas.
Ford Stadium, an on-campus facility, will seat 32,000 with 600 preferred club level seats and 240 seats in 23 luxury suites. The field level is 25 feet below ground with half the stadium’s seats sunken below grade.
