Norman, Okla. ? Kansas University was popped by No. 5 Oklahoma, 11-3, in Big 12 softball Saturday at the OU Softball Complex.
The Sooners, led by first baseman-shortstop Lisa Carey’s three-run home run and grand slam, run-ruled the Jayhawks in six innings. Carey, a Topeka Washburn Rural product, finished with seven RBIs.
Oklahoma, the top team in the Big 12, jumped on KU early with Carey’s three-run homer in the first inning off pitcher Sarah Workman Clopton.
A pair of doubles by Lisa Davis and Ashli Barrett pushed the lead to 4-0 after the first inning. Mandy Fulton’s solo shot in the third gave Oklahoma a 5-0 advantage.
Kansas rallied on Courtney Wright’s three-run home run down the right-field line in the fourth inning, pulling the Jayhawks within two.
But a pair of walks in the bottom of the fourth, plus a single by Christy Ring, set the table for Carey’s grand slam, putting Oklahoma up 9-3 and chasing Clopton.
Clopton is now 15-12.
Kansas pitcher Melanie DeWinter surrendered two runs on two hits in 21/3 innings of relief.
Oklahoma improved to 54-6 overall and 16-1 in the Big 12. Kansas dropped to 30-28 and 5-10.
KU will face OU again at 1 p.m. today.
