Southwest Missouri State nipped Kansas by one run twice to sweep a softball doubleheader on Wednesday at Jayhawk Field.
The Bears won the first game, 3-2, and the second, 1-0, to drop the Jayhawks’ record below .500.
“It was disappointing to lose like that,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said. “Things didn’t go our way. The kids battled back, but we couldn’t get the big hits when we needed them. We just did not do well with baserunners in scoring position.”
In the first game, the Bears (26-22) scored two in the second and one in the third. The Jayhawks (26-27) rallied in the bottom of the third when Amy Hulse delivered a two-run triple down the right-field line.
In the second game, the Bears scored the decisive run in the top of the seventh when Meghan Brillhart stole home.
KU’s Heather Sims went 3-for-3 in the second game. Hulse had a double for the Jayhawks.
Next for KU is a two-game series with Iowa State, starting with a 1 p.m. game on Saturday at Jayhawk Field.
