The Kansas Relays has a sponsor.

Columbia/HCA, the largest health care corporation in the country, will become the title sponsor of the Relays, beginning next year, KU athletic director Bob Frederick announced today.

Columbia/HCA will donate several thousand dollars — exact figures weren’t disclosed — in an attempt to bring in world-class athletes to the Relays.

A “feature event” will be planned for the ’96 Relays.

“With 1996 being an Olympic year, the enthusiasm surrounding track and field will be at a very high level,” Kevin Gross, the president of the Kansas/Missouri division of Columbia/HCA said.

Next year’s event will be called the Columbia/HCA Kansas Relays.

“A corporate sponsorship is something we’ve been working on for quite some time,” KU coach Gary Schwartz said. “Getting Columbia/HCA on board is a very positive step.”

The agreement is for one year with an option for an extension.

The Kansas Relays began today with the heptathlon and decathlon at Memorial Stadium. Those events will conclude Thursday with full days of competition scheduled on Friday and Saturday.
