St. Louis (AP) — Roy Williams of Kansas, whose team has been ranked fifth or higher for 16 straight weeks after being unraknked at the start of the season, was named Coach of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association on Wednesday.

The Jayhawks are 29-4 and finished tied to Okahoma for second place in the Big Eight Conference. Kansas was picked to finish fifth in the conference before the season began and did not receive a vote in the preseason AP poll.

Williams will be honored during the USBWA’s annual meeting April 2 at Denver, site of this year’s NCAA Final Four.
