Sports director named for KU women

Marian E. Washington, a graduate student and assistant instructor of physical eduation at Kansas University, has been named assistant director of intercollegiate athletics for women’s sports at KU.

The appointment, effective July 1, was announced today by Executive Vice Chancellor Del Shankel and Athletic Director Clyde Walker.

Miss Washinton will direct KU’s women’s athletic program and continue some of her current coaching activities in basketball and track.

The women’s sports program includes competition in field hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, track and field and golf.

Miss Washington, who will report directly to Walker, is now head coach for women’s basketball and track and field.

She was a member of the U.S. women’s national basketball team in 1969, 70 and 71; a member of the AAU All American Basketball team in 1972 and 1974, and was named to the National Collegiate Women’s Championship Team in 1969.

In track and field, she was the Middle Atlantic AAU discus champion from 1964 through 1970; won the Missouri Valley AAU discus title in 1972 and 1973; and was the U.S. Track and Field Federation champion and record holder in discus in 1972 and 73.

She was the AAU National Junior Olympic Champion in track in 1972 and a participant in the Olympic Trials in 1964, 1968 and 1972.

A native of West Chester, Pa., Miss Washington holds a B.S. degree in physical education from West Chester State College and will receive an M.S. degree from KU this year.

Before joining the KU staff in 1972, she taught physical education at Martin Luther King Junior High School in Kansas City, Mo.
