La. Tech at Kansas coverage

Kansas defeats Louisiana Tech, 13-10

  • David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, Lawrence, KS

FINAL: Matthew Wyman's game-winning, 52-yard field goal sends KU to 13-10 win over LA Tech

Kansas kicker Matthew Wyman drilled a 52-yard field goal with no time remaining, giving KU a dramatic, 13-10 victory over LA Tech on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

KU received two gifts from Louisiana Tech.

With the Bulldogs on the verge of icing the game up 10-3 with 12:59 left in the fourth quarter, quarterback Ryan Higgins fumbled the ball after a 27-yard gain to the KU 2. Though it was originally ruled he stepped out of bounds, replay overturned the call, and because it was fumbled into the end zone, KU received possession at its own 20.

The Jayhawks responded with an eight-play, 80-yard drive, with tight end Jimmay Mundine finishing it off with a 22-yard touchdown reception.

Tech had a chance at a potential game-winning field-goal attempt inside KU's 5 with less than two minutes to go, but running back Tevin King fumbled at the 5, with KU's Keon Stowers recovering.

The Jayhawks followed with an eight-play, 60-yard drive, capped by Wyman's heroics.

KU quarterback Jake Heaps finished 28-for-46 passing for 279 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Tony Pierson added 113 combined rushing and receiving yards.

The Jayhawks (2-1) will have a bye next week before playing host to Texas Tech on Oct. 5.

Box score

HOW THEY SCORED

First Quarter

0:06 — Hunter Lee 8 pass from Ryan Higgins. Kyle Fisher kick. Louisiana Tech picked off Jake Heaps and began its third drive at its own 43 yard line. Ten plays and 57 yards later, Higgins hung in the pocket, took a monster hit from KU linebacker Ben Heeney but put the pass on the money for Lee, who beat safety Isaiah Johnson and made a diving grab. (LTU 7, KU 0).

Second Quarter

2:20 — Matthew Wyman 39 field goal. The Jayhawks got on the board with an 11-play, 58-yard drive that started at the Jayhawks' 20 after a missed field goal by Louisiana Tech kicker Kyle Fisher. KU quarterback Jake Heaps was 4-of-6 passing on the drive, with back-to-back first down tosses to Brandon Bourbon and Tony Pierson. He also scrambled for five yards to help set up the field goal. (LTU 7, KU 3).

Third Quarter

12:55 — Kyle Fisher 39 field goal. Tech opened up the second half with an eight-play, 53-yard drive that stalled at the edge of the red zone when KU's coverage stiffened. The big blow came when Higgins hit Richie Casey for a 10-yard gain and a first down and received 15 more yards on when Ben Goodman was called for roughing the passer. Fisher's make snapped a streak of four consecutive missed field goals for the LTU sophomore. (LTU 10, KU 3).

Fourth Quarter

9:54 — Jimmay Mundine 22 pass from Jake Heaps. Wyman kick. A huge play by the KU defense at the other goal line that resulted in a touchback for Kansas instead of a first-and-goal for Louisiana Tech set up this eight-play, 80-yard drive that featured two huge plays by wide receiver Christian Matthews, the first a 20-yard grab for a first down and the second a huge block to get Mundine into the end zone. (KU 10, LTU 10).

0:00 — Matthew Wyman 52 field goal. After Michael Reynolds forced a fumble from Louisiana Tech's Tevin King at the KU 5-yard line when Tech was driving for the game-winning score, KU marched 60 yards in eight plays and 1:33 to set up the game-winner, which Wyman drilled as time expired. Heaps hit Pierson for a 29-yard gain over the middle with less than 30 seconds to play to set up the kick. (KU 13, KU 10).

LOL, fantastic.

RXDOC in reply to Lcjayhawk

If only he were our coach!

Marshan3q in reply to RXDOC

I'm becoming so much less optimistic than I was at the beginning of the season. I love KU basketball, but it's so disappointing to only be "the basketball school".. 1-11 looks like it could happen, I just hope it doesn't.. i'm not usually this cynical.. i'm usually too optimistic.

Bradly Moore

He won't be shaky when it's for the win.

Lajayhawk

BOOM. Thank you GTech.

Joe Ross in reply to Danr

Yes. And Im a bit surprised he's not plugging Spider-2-Y-Banana

Jesse Newell in reply to Will Bixenman

Nine tackles with an INT.

Lcjayhawk in reply to Baldjedi

Hahaha

Lefty54

I need more alcohol.

Lcjayhawk

Win or lose, I still love Gruden in that Hooters commercial. And that girl doesn't hurt things either.

Tech uses its first timeout. First and 10 at the KU 29. Remember, Tech's kicker has been shaky.

Baldjedi

I think we need to hire the Hooters girl as OC
