Rock Chalk! Dedicate that one to Thomas.

waywardJay 11 years, 10 months ago

I think our guards for the most part decided to match their counterparts today. Ty and Josh played pretty well, not perfect games, but certainly well enough to win.

Our Bigs played down a little bit tonight, but we weren't as aggressive downlow without Trob banking us.... Withey played pretty solid, nice to see him have a few plays.

KU_FanSince75 11 years, 10 months ago

So, now we have to listen to Digger Phelps coming to Lawrence on "Game Day" and tell us how K-State could still win the Big 12-----OMG, I just can't wait!

brooksmd 11 years, 10 months ago

Come on nebr, I'm anxiously awaiting your Brady bs.

Eric Williams 11 years, 10 months ago

i'll bite even though I didn't see the game tonight, as I was at a HS basketball game. He may have played much better, but if we need 14 from Brady then we didn't play very well.

BM is a good on-ball defender, but my criticism with him is in a few areas.

  1. When he makes cross-court or passes to a cutter he doesn't put enough zip on them. They are lazy passes.

  2. Too often he leaves his feet with the ball and has no plan, which causes bad decisions and bad passes. He drives the baseline with no intention of scoring, jumps out of bounds which limits his passing options as the goal blocks a large portion of the court.

  3. I don't think he is a good decision maker with the ball on the perimeter, in regards to getting in a good position to swing the ball around the perimeter. Too often he tries to slip bounce passes around defenders rather than use his dribble to get himself in better position.

waywardJay 11 years, 10 months ago

His turnover was atrocious.

He is a lazy passer when it's on the perimeter, but his post passing is acceptable... makes up for alot of what he lacks.

I do take exception with his on Ball defense. He's too slow against guys like Higgin's and Burk. Hell even, Tyshawn was getting smoked tonight and he's proably our fastest. htose kids are just great players both Higgins and Burks.

Brady came out of his funk a bit tonight. His three dropping was definetely an added bonus, but Brady should not be taking more shots than Marcus. Ever. ( he Had 3 more tonight )

HIs Offense offset his lapses on D tonight.

I've always said when his shot is dropping he's not a liability, and for most of this season he has been. ELijah was given a chance early in thsi game 0-2 on ill-advised 3's. he needs to take better shots when he gets in.

Travis should be ready by Saturday, and we'll need him on Pullen.

tis4tim 11 years, 10 months ago

Most guys would be too slow against Higgins and Burks. Burks is NBA-ready.

Now, contrast his overall game with someone like Selby at this point in his career and it appears Selby could use another layer of polish before making the jump.

DevilHawk 11 years, 10 months ago

Trust me: Brady had an excellent first half.

Our defense was bad, but it was mostly because (1) CU was red-hot from beyond the arc (better than 60%); and (2) no one was willing to step in and take charges against Burks and Higgins.

We should have Releford and TRob back when we play them in AFH, and those two players will help us significantly in this match up.

FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eric Williams 11 years, 10 months ago

Someone needs to light a fire under these guys. They need to learn quickly that they can't beat teams just because they are more talented.

We've been outworked by Iowa State, Nebraska, Texas, Colorado, UCLA and USC.

waywardJay 11 years, 10 months ago

I don't know man. I don't think we took them lightly, i think they are pretty good.

UNdefeated at home until tonight, and pretty tough on the road.

The rebounding stats were key, but I honestly think we looked alot better tonight.

Outworked would suggest they don't have some talent. Burks and Higgins can play.

Dale Kroening 11 years, 10 months ago

I agree, and they also hit 9-13 threes. Missery lost by double digits in Boulder, and lets see what Texas does. Good road win tonight, now time to smash some kitty cats.

dtownhawkfan 11 years, 10 months ago

you didn't even watch the game so how can you comment on who outworked who???

Eric Williams 11 years, 10 months ago

mostly from the other games i've watched and the fact that we beat CU by 4.

If our guys played 40 minutes of basketball busting their tails like they did the first 8 minutes against Texas, no team can come near us. The problem is they don't work for 40 minutes.

Stats don't tell the entire tale. And maybe i shouldn't of included CU in that list but every other team i mentioned outworked us and it was evident to anyone that watched those games.

hawk_of_ages 11 years, 10 months ago

I definitely take issue with you including both Colorado and Iowa State. You can't expect blowout wins on the road in the Big 12.

And I don't agree that getting "outworked" is our problem. I think our effort has been very good for most of the year. The reason we tend to blow leads is more a lack of mental toughness on the offensive end -- too many bad shots and turnovers.

Brian Conrad 11 years, 10 months ago

how can you possibly be taken serious? trash talk the team and did not even watch game.. they actually played well, Colorado was bombing 3s and great free throw shooters. Plus I have been on Brady fairly hard. but he had great game , still bonehead end of game . But he is back shooting great and played excellent in first half.

brooksmd 11 years, 10 months ago

Those who were there reported one individual shouted f--k KU during the moment of silence.

waywardJay 11 years, 10 months ago

actually it makes sense..... You can't beat them Curse them out and run like a coward.

Brian Conrad 11 years, 10 months ago

Colorado fans low class with f chant end of loosing game . would love the game been little larger win for the Rock Chalk Chant to overshadow the bad language Chant. *notes 1. hard to say but, rooting for MU to beat Texas ... 2. KSU will finish 5th in big 12. no way they edge out Texas , MU or KU and doubt A &M . Iowa state and Colorado may make run for NCAA tourney also. with the extra teams allowed in NCAA tourney, 68 teams in this year give KSU and Iowa State a shot of making it in. think 6 will get in. But last 2 better pick it up if they are going to make it. KSU gets on a great run.. NCAA wants them in after preseason top 4 ranking. Frank gets the "anger management" under control and think they will get on a run.. after a loss to KU ... Go Cowboys , Go MU and Go Turg beat those Longhorns for ole KU . tough part for KSU fans.. if KSU beats Texas could vault KU to big 12 Championship 7th year in a row..

lance1jhawk 11 years, 10 months ago

All the Brady haters need to just go away right now. Yes he made that stupid pass in the second half, but you and I know he saved our a$$$ tonight.

waywardJay 11 years, 10 months ago

Brady's not the reason we won.

Brady player better, but what he lacks still hurt us tonight. He was getting blown by by both HIggins and BUrks ( All of our guys were )

We didn't use Travis on Burks or Higgin's tonight, SOmethign tells me in Larryville Higgins and Burks will have alot tougher time.

didjabuti 11 years, 10 months ago

So all of our guys get blown by, and in your mind it hurts us that Brady does too? It only hurts us if there is a better option. Higgins and Burks are great players, they can get by most people.

For so many games the fact that B-Mor wasn't producing any offensive stats meant he should be riding the pine. Now that he is, he shouldn't be on the floor because he didn't do a better job than anyone else on defending top quality guards? Really?

waywardJay 11 years, 10 months ago

I have alot less problem with him getting blown by on defense when he's putting up points in contrast.....

It's easier to stomach the "GLUE" angle when... you know... his role actually adheres the team.

Craig Colgin 11 years, 10 months ago

Correct, he isn't the reason we won, he is precisely 1/9th of the reason we won, and hopefully people will start to realize that and give credit where credit is due.

waywardJay 11 years, 10 months ago

He played BETTER... There is the credit. Nothing more is due.

When you are getting blown by on defense ( and everyone was )... it is incumbant of you to make up for that by SCoring and producing pointson the other end....

Every Hawk witht he acception of Markieff and Tyrel did that reasonably well in this game.... and tyrel and Markieff came up with the two biggest plays of the game on defense.

Brian Powell 11 years, 10 months ago

lovemyhawks 11 years, 10 months ago

i thought releford was going to play tonite! hated to see a game without robinson OR releford!! hope we have both for the kitties! sure didn't like the refs tonight..... thought they tried hard several times to help the buffs. thank goodness for free throws!!!!! can't believe i can say that but very glad i can!! glad that one is over......

nwjhawk 11 years, 10 months ago

It wasn't pretty, but now that you've taken care of business on the court, go take care of TRob. Safe travels to DC.

P0WER 11 years, 10 months ago

Great effort by everyone tonight! Nice way to bounce back from a tough lose at home Hawks! The LR patches are a nice touch on the uni's. The CU crowd stooped to a new low with their chants. Oh well, we owned them in allen fieldhouse west once again! Keep your head up TRob. Can't wait for you to get back home!

KU_FanSince75 11 years, 10 months ago

The nice thing----and I know I should not count my chickens yet-----but assuming we beat K-State on Saturday-----it would be our 20th win on the year------nice!

waywardJay 11 years, 10 months ago

We should never assume wins, but even if we DON'T beat K-state.

We got Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Iowa State, and Mizzou still left. We should win at least 1 of those games. 20 is odds I would take.

KU_FanSince75 11 years, 10 months ago

HCBS said it was a big win and for the most part, pleased with the effort, especially second chance points. It will be a hell of an atmosphere at AFH on Saturday!

waywardJay 11 years, 10 months ago

I'm glad we didn't play TOO jacked tonight.

I thought it was good we played a very workman-like performance tonight.

Didn't get too far ahead of ourselves, we played like a team that responded in a very short time to ALOT of adversity.

We played together.

I have changed my mind, our lead guards played incredible.

Shot 50% from the field. 4-7 from three, only 3 turnovers amongst them 9 assists and 8 boards. Big props to Tyshawn and Josh today.

ljmhawk 11 years, 10 months ago

how come we never run an isolation play? selby should be able to beat anyone off the bounce..then he can finish or dish it off. the guards need to start driving it to the rim hard.

DanR 11 years, 10 months ago

Guards drove fairly well tonight. (TT and Reed both made several good drives. Reed got called for a charge on one, got fouled on at least one other in the final minutes).

Really good win... CU is not a bad team. Small inside, but they bust butt to make up for it. Hell, I'd even like to see them make the tournament in a different region.

fansincewilt 11 years, 10 months ago

The Buffs playing well at home but not as well on the road. This was a really good win.

MGJayhawk 11 years, 10 months ago

Big 12 refs are the worst! I can't believe how many bad calls they make (both ways). I wish they would let them play more. The poor twins have to play so tentative because they get whistled so much.

MrPilot 11 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, it was bordering on absurd tonight.

jordandayjohnson 11 years, 10 months ago

I totally agree. These refs and the last ones seem bent on controlling every aspect of the game. they are not calling what they see, they are calling what they want everyone else to see.

DevilHawk 11 years, 10 months ago

Wrong.

Pac-10 refs are the worst in both basketball and football, hands-down.

Moreover, the twins were definitely not playing tentatively tonight. They could have - and perhaps should have - been whistled for several more fouls.

Remember: many things that are accepted and don't get whistled in the NBA are not accepted at the college level. That is part of why college basketball is better than the NBA - they try to keep college a cleaner game.

Eric Williams 11 years, 10 months ago

ahem...

anyone remember the Big Ten officials in the KSU-Syracuse and UNC-Tennessee bowl games?

Brian Conrad 11 years, 10 months ago

3 intentional fouls end of game not called . Crazy no call on grabbing the jersey of Tyshawn before he charged. Grab jersey always intentional foul . bout turned him around. Hard slam down foul on Marcus not even close to ball.. intentional if you do not attempt to go for ball. p i t i f u l ... to close to Vegas refs obviously on some betters payroll.

jordandayjohnson 11 years, 10 months ago

I was watching other games and I would say we pass slower than any other team I have seen. Does anyone else recognize this. Sometimes we seem to be in slow motion. Maybe its just me.

milehighhawk 11 years, 10 months ago

Hmm. Could be the altitude. Precisely how high are you right now?

;)

jordandayjohnson 11 years, 10 months ago

could be more but not much, it does slow things down.

DanR 11 years, 10 months ago

passing against a zone. Self likes the big loopers. Didn't really turn it over, so I guess it works. Reed had to use his full 42" vertical to get one of them.

kureader 11 years, 10 months ago

I feel badly for the thousands of KU fans in the Denver area who always look forward to this game in Boulder as their only chance to see KU play in person. Looks like those days are over unless we can book CU in the preseason. For the sake of the avid KU fans in Colorado, I hope we do that. At least KU finished off the series with a win. Great job by the Hawks on the road.

jacpac57 11 years, 10 months ago

My son made the trip and yes that was the chant said it went on all the first half. Said worst fans he has ever been around, just as bad as the South Florida fans when he went there for football. At least he should have a good time now that we won. ROCK CHALK!!!!!!

Benjamin Piehler 11 years, 10 months ago

really bummed i couldnt watch the game, I had night class :-( .... glad to see they won... rock chalk

Dale Kroening 11 years, 10 months ago

Buffs first loss at home, so F_U_ colorado ! Good road win for the Jayhawks. Now lets roast some kitty cats come Saturday.

jordandayjohnson 11 years, 10 months ago

Or playing in the big 12, we're a big target. Texas hit us on a bad night, Wish we had them again in Austin.

DevilHawk 11 years, 10 months ago

Some things are important than basketball...

We should be fine as the season proceeds.

MrPilot 11 years, 10 months ago

As much as I like to see it, there's a hilarious typo on the "Next Game" block:

Last meeting: KU won, 180-90 (3-13-10)

kesmithstl1 11 years, 10 months ago

Can someone enlighten me, what were the CU students chanting tonight. I heard the DUI for Brady. What else was said?

Hank Cross 11 years, 10 months ago

How much trash have we talked on other teams? Remember the "Who shot SS?" signs and cap guns after Steve Stopanovich shot himself? Or how about members of the "Billy Tubbs Running Club" coming in crutches and bandages after Billy got run over? Lord knows how many F-Bombs were dropped (deservedly) on Norm Stewart at AFH.

Hank Cross 11 years, 10 months ago

Then you haven't been around that long. Even today KU waves the picture of John Brown at MU. Brown could be classified a domestic terrorist who finally attacked the US Govt.

Hank Cross 11 years, 10 months ago

I've criticized playing Brady as much as anyone, but he had a great game tonight. He was looking for his shot and making it. He also had two good assists. Had he been playing at even 80% of this level, he wouldn't have been the subject of so much debate on this board.

DevilHawk 11 years, 10 months ago

Our best guard line-up tonight was easily EJ+Selby+(Brady/Reed).

EJ had 1 rebound and 4 assists against 0 turnovers and 0 fouls in 12 minutes. He also had one defensive lapse at the top of the key and took one shot when he should have passed it, but he should have played more tonight than he did.

More later.

Tony Bandle 11 years, 10 months ago

We've got posters bitching about Brady, about Tyshawn, about Coach Self, about Withey, about Josh, about just about everybody on the team except Tyrel.

People, after we beat the Kitties on Saturday we'll be a 20 game winner BEFORE the end of January, back to at least to a top 5 position, get Travis and TRob back, have a very good shot to win the rest of our home games and four out of five away games, add to our nation-leading consecutive NCAA appearance streak....heck the glass looks pretty damn half full to me!!!!

David Howell 11 years, 10 months ago

Yes, on the road we took care of business. But it was painful to watch and I get tired of the Hawks defense making other teams look better then they are.

The Hawks continually play around with an opponent instead of putting them away. Maybe some of it has to do with an over done rotation. However, at this point I have to believe that Coach is trying to figure out who can do what he is asking and perform on a regular basis.

I know it's not the popular opinion, but to me the Twins are what is going to bring us down in the tournament. They are too up and down and refuse to realize that the little things really add up. FT's, missed putbacks and silly stupid fouls. At least tonight the boxscore didn't show any 3 pt. attempts and I can't say I remember any.

In short the Twins should have been dominant tonight. Colorado really didn't have any quality bigs and they should have tore up the stat sheet.
