Last week's winner: It was Donna Kennedy, who was not only 6-0, but had the closest prognostication on the KU-CU game, picking the Jayhawks to win 24-17.

If not for the disturbing revelation that coach Dennis Franchione was selling insider information about his team for $1,200 per year to wealthy boosters, Javorskie Lane would be the biggest story of the year for the Aggies.

Lane, who reportedly weighs more than 290 pounds, has rushed for 15 touchdowns this season and 43 in his career. The number might be higher but, strangely, Franchione gave him just two carries in a 34-17 loss to Miami.

Lane carries the ball just twice against Kansas and the Jayhawks won’t have any trouble. That’s not going to happen, not that it ever should have happened.

That loss came on the road, where the Aggies are 1-2. At Kyle Field, A&M is 5-0, including a two-point victory over Fresno State and a one-point come-from-behind number against Oklahoma State.

Lane (575 yards) ranks second on the team to Stephen McGee in rushing (711 yards). Speed back Mike Goodson (465 yards) also is a threat in the A&M option attack.

KU’s smallish defensive ends must come up big against the option. Look for a big night out of true freshman Jake Laptad, a 6-foot-4, 223-pound graduate of Tulsa powerhouse Jenks High. Laptad looks better every week and is coming off a huge game against Colorado.

Predicted outcome: Kansas 31, Texas A&M 28.

In other games:

Missouri 40, Iowa State 10: The Tigers’ defense is getting better. Last week, Texas Tech scored just 10 points. Mizzou will be looking to erase the memory of last season’s loss to the Cyclones.

Kansas State 41, Baylor 13: When Ron Prince decided to go for two and succeeded last week he again made a loud statement to his players, saying he believes in them. The play succeeded, the defense failed and K-State lost, but Prince gained even more respect from his players.

Texas Tech 38, Colorado 24: Cold, hard fact: The South still has the edge on the North. It’s much closer than in past years, but the order hasn’t changed just yet.

Texas 44, Nebraska 17: In the book, “The Nebraska Way,” former Nebraska trainer Doak Ostergard said that Cornhuskers coach Bill Callahan emerged from a phone conversation with Tom Osborne saying that the ex-coach and then Congressman was “trying to run things from Washington.” Worse, Ostergard quotes Callahan as calling Osborne “that crusty old ... ’’

Osborne, the acting athletic director, is Callahan’s boss now. Not that it matters much. The players already seemingly had quit on the coach.

Oregon 34, USC 31: The Ducks’ offense is the best in the West, and the same can be said for the USC defense. Give the nod to the home team.
