Gary Woodland hits from the 18th tee during the second round of the Memorial golf tournament, Friday, July 17, 2020, in Dublin, Ohio.

Former University of Kansas golf standout Gary Woodland shot a 5-over 75 on the final day of the PGA Championship and dropped from a tie for 10th entering the fourth round to a tie for 34th by the end of the tournament.

Woodland had hovered around even par throughout the first three days at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He shot par on Thursday, was 2-under in Round 2 at 68 and finished 1-over in Round 3 to take a 1-under total score into the final round.

Playing with Sam Burns in the seventh-to-last group to go off on Sunday, Woodland shot 4-over on the front nine with four bogeys and five pars.

The 2019 U.S. Open champion did not record his first birdie of the final round until the 17th hole. And even that was followed up by a bogey at the 18th.

Woodland’s 34th-place finish earned him a prize of $61,607 for the week. Had he been able to hold on to a spot in the top 10, he would have won around $350,000 instead.

Justin Thomas won the event by holding of Will Zalatoris in a playoff. Thomas brought home $2.7 million for his efforts and Zalatoris recorded a $1.62 million consolation prize for finishing as the runner up.

Next up on the PGA Tour schedule is a trip to Fort Worth, Texas for the Charles Schwab Challenge.

This event, in 2020, was the first PGA Tour tournament played following the decision to shut things down because of the COVID-19 pandemic that year. Woodland emerged from the layoff in fine form, finishing in sole possession of ninth place.

At last year’s event, Woodland finished in a tie for 14th.
