After twice being jumped in the poll without losing, the Associated Press voters had a reason to drop the Kansas men’s basketball team this week.

And they did.

Fresh off of their first loss of the 2018-19 season — 80-76 at No. 18 Arizona State last Saturday night — the Jayhawks (10-1) fell to No. 5 in this week’s poll, released Monday morning.

Arizona State (9-2), meanwhile, jumped a spot to No. 17 after upsetting Kansas and falling to Vanderbilt last week.

Duke (11-1) jumped back into the top spot in this week’s AP poll, with Michigan (12-0), Tennessee (10-1) and Virginia (11-0) joining KU to round out the Top 5.

Despite falling out of the top spot in the poll, the Jayhawks did hold on to a few first-place votes, with four of the 64 AP voters keeping KU at No. 1 in their latest polls.

Duke received 35 first-place votes, Michigan 9, Tennessee 12 and Virginia 4.

Graham Couch, of the Lansing (Mich.) State Journal, who did not have KU anywhere on his ballot last week because the Jayhawks had yet to play a true road game this season, put the Jayhawks at No. 1 this week despite the loss.

Kevin McNamara, of the Providence (R.I.) Journal, Scott Richey, of the News Gazette in Illinois, and Seth Davis, of CBS/Sports Illustrated, were the other three voters who kept Kansas on top.

The Jayhawks also received multiple votes at Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, and were not lower than No. 6 on any ballot.

Kansas will be off until Wednesday, when the team reports back to campus following winter break to begin preparations for Saturday’s home game with Eastern Michigan, which represents the final tuneup before Big 12 play begins on Jan. 2, when Oklahoma comes to Allen Fieldhouse.

The Sooners, new to the poll this week at No. 25, are one of three Big 12 teams ranked in this week’s Top 25, joining KU in 5th and Texas Tech at No. 11. Kansas State also is currently receiving votes.

Here’s a look at the complete poll:

Santa's Xmas list for the Kansas Jayhawks.

1] Bill Self - at least 2 more National Championships, one where he beats Jay Wright and another where he beats John Calipari.

2] Big Dok - A body that doesn't fail him ever again. [And a rule change to allow dunks to count as foul shots].

3] Adidas - A production error that suddenly spills out 10 million pairs of left footed basketball shoes!

4] D. Lawson - a healthy Dok so he can operate in the paint without 3 guys draped all over him.

5] Quentin - a reboot of his senior high school season on the court for his freshman college season.

6] Lagerald - consistency of his overall game to match a night when he is "on" from three.

7] Big Mac - More playing time.

8] Lightfoot - A fifteen foot jumper.

9] Dev - Stay at warp speed..... just make better decisions [and passes].

10] Marcus - a jump shot...any kind of jump shot!!

11] Charlie - Peripheral vision and remembering there are four other guys out there on the court with the same color jerseys.

12] Silvio - A honest guardian...and maybe actually get off the bench.

13] KJ - 1 more 1", 35 more pounds and your brothers moves!!

Not surprised...I like some people that still value us as appears they see that we are the only team with a loss at home. I'd like to see Michigan and Virginia as one and two. When I look at KU, we have Tennessee 3, MSU 8, Marq 18, Villanova 29 all as early victories. With a lone loss on the road to #17. Tennessee has "the best" loss if that is possible, and Duke's loss isn't horrible so I think all of those three are comparable. Although a little overrated at the time, still a beatdown of 40, Duke clearly has the best win. I think our win over Tenn would be considered the second best win of the season.

Just some random thoughts, still like where the team is, and am excited to get the team healthy. I think this has helped Lawson gain some experience, get some of the rust off, and he is making the most of it. As the team starts getting just an uptick in 3 point shooting, I think this will be great for the year.

I find Vick as a great spot shooter, but as a moving 3 point shooter he rarely connects. From a driving perspective, I think he has better moves than he uses, and I like it when he goes to the rim, it seems like those are valuable buckets when he does it.

Oh, I'm so excited for conference play to come to fruition. My bet is 2 more games without De Sousa, and we get a ruling on eligibility. If it is only the $2300 he gets re-instated, if there is questions on other items, he is left on the bench, without the chance to play this year.

Jeff, did you really mean to say we are the only team with a home loss?

Vick needs to learn to fake a 3 point shot and drive to the basket. I can't remember when I have seen Vick use a shot fake and drive. The way teams are guarding him, a simple shot fake would leave him wide open for a drive and dish...Maybe he will get one for Xmas ....
