A note about recent changes

You may have noticed that our sites look a bit different this morning. That's because our content management system has been updated to allow for new and improved features.

I'll talk a bit about those in a moment, but first you should know that, as with any major change, we're experiencing some bugs. So we've been troubleshooting, identifying problem areas and compiling issues so that our Web development team can fix them.

Some of the issues we've experienced so far are: - missing comments; - inaccurate comment counts; - problems with the mobile site of ljworld.com; - email editions are not going out; - problems reading private messages

We apologize for these issues, and we're working to fix them.

Now, for the good news. Our upgraded system has a number of new features that we're excited about.

Social networking

You can now sign into LJWorld.com, KUsports.com and Lawrence.com. using your Twitter, Google or OpenID accounts.

In comments

  • Users can now edit posts; you have a several-minute window to make changes;
  • An updated "reply" function that makes threaded comments easier to follow;
  • A thumbs-up button that lets users like a comment, as you might on Facebook.
  • Links to photos and videos will now show in the comments section, and users can upload photos with a caption; remember, with great power comes great responsibility

Mobile

If you're tired of trying to navigate our sites on your phone, you'll be pleased to know that the sites now automatically redirect to stripped-down mobile versions, which are easier to read. We're still working out some kinks, but we're especially excited about this. If you liked reading the regular site on your mobile device, there's a "view full site" button at the bottom of the page, which loads the normal site. This feature is not yet available for the mobile versions of KUsports.com and Lawrence.com.

We anticipate more features rolling out in the near future. If you're experiencing any of our growing pains, please be patient as we work out the kinks.

No sweat..we all bitch about this site once and awhile but it's kind of like a virtual sports bar....without the beer...without the hot waitresses.....without the chicken wings or flat screen televisions.

At least this "bar" is open 24/7/365, there is no secondary smoke and no one gets a DUI when they leave!!

Unlike "Cheers", nobody knows your (real) name here.

Love the new changes. Great job.

I posted this on another article, but I'll post again here in case you didn't see it. It looks like the thumbs-up button doesn't work for IE7. It worked fine for me using Chrome, Safari, Firefox, IE8, & IE9. However, with IE7 it just repeatedly asks you to log in.

Just asking, but does anyone else get the millionth customer popup frequently when using an android or iphone? I seem to at least a couple times a day.

Just wondering if its universal or just me?

"...users can upload photos with a caption; remember, with great power comes great responsibility."

Samantha Ryan, where are you?

I agree with this. I also have no idea how to view full the site from the mobile site (mostly because I don't think that it's possible at this point).

The message boards are part of the reason this site is as great as it is. I am unable get to them from my mobile device after this update.

You can't get to the full site from the mobile one because World Co. IT hasn't got that feature set up yet. Since they knew they were fielding the mobile version before it was ready for prime time, the "view full site" button should have been the one thing they made sure was working before putting it online. BIG MISTAKE on their part. And they should NOT be forcing mobile users to it, mobile users should have the option to pick which "view" they want to see when accessing KUSports.com from their mobile devices.

Same story listed twice, two different comment streams.

Let me choose which site (full or mobile). I do not like mobile sites and the mobile version that is popping up is not good. No way to see all of the stories that have been published and there is no option to get to the full site.

May just have to find another site for my KU sports news if mobile is not disable by default at my discretion. I am not going to fight this every time I want to know what's going on.

Sigh... I would love to see a poll taken here. The question would be: "Smartphone readers of kusports.com, would you prefer to view our website as it was meant to be viewed in all its most excellent glory, or would you rather automatically be redirected to a 'stripped down version' amd have the option of scrolling to the bottom to select the fully featured version manually for each and every article, every time?"

Seriously, phone/tablet users arent surfing on tiny postage stamp screens anymore. Who, in 2012, seriously wants to be forcibly redirected to a "stripped down version" of anything??? I find it hard to believe that more than 30% of responders to such a poll would actually want this, but this is the "feature" that kusports is most excited about?

I'm with you, Chris, the mobile version is ridiculous and forcing users to it is plain stupid. Let us pick which version we want to see. At the very least, the FIRST thing they should have made sure was working on the mobile site that they FORCE mobile users to is the "view full site" button that will SOMEDAY be at the bottom of the page -- and hopefully functional!

Since the upgrade, I have found other interesting websites because I can not view the full kusports.com website on neither my phone nor my tablet. Thanks LJW.

Also, should really have an upvote/downvote feature like reddit.com.

I'm sure some would like an automatic downvote feature...
