Tim Beck was the first to leave Kansas University's football coaching staff. The question is, will he be the last? It's hard to say, but I'll go ahead and guess no.Coaches are in Anaheim, Calif., for another day or two at the AFCA Convention right now. There, they catch up, pass out business cards, the unemployed bother head coaches who have openings (Mark Mangino [has one][1]) and occasionally they all do things the convention is really set up for, like meetings and speakers.Out of the great northwest, Seattle Times reporter Bob Condotta is reporting on his blog that he's hearing rumors of Washington [ having interest in Bill Young][2], KU's defensive coordinator. Nothing that's gaining a ton of steam, but another example that the college football hot stove (the assistant coach version) is warming up.It's not surprising. Bill Young has been popular this time of year for a while now, yet he's never been lured away since joining the Jayhawks in 2002. For every rumor like Washington coming to the surface, there might be three or four cases that never get made public regarding a program wanting Young.Several other KU coaches will join the list, considering Kansas won the Orange Bowl with a bunch of under-the-radar recruits. Seriously, what's not to like about what the Jayhawks accomplished? For those wanting the entire football operation to stay in tact, buckle up. First, there was Tim Beck, [Anthony Collins and Aqib Talib.][3] Another assistant or two could be next. It's that time of year. Hey Lew! Throw a few more stacks of money at Coach Young. Problem solved!

That's right. Lew. KU fans have been implored to 'pony up' to aid the department. Getting Coach Young a raise appears to be a small investment for the potential return.

Coach Bill Young is such a great defensive coordinator and huge part of this great Jayhawk football team. The players absolutely love the way this guy coaches and how he improves their techniques, knowledge, and games. We need to do our best to hang on to guys from this staff and especially Coach Young and Coach Warriner. This is the price of success as other teams will try and raid your staff to capture some of the magic.
Coach Mangino said at the Orange Bowl you have to surround yourself with great people. Let's make sure we do our best to keep this group together to keep building. We love you Coach Young! Keep on rocking!

I agree that we need to pay our top coaching talent the kind of money they deserve on the open market. The return in revenue generated by a successful team will more than offset the payroll costs.
But some coaches will still want to move on to "better" programs no matter how much money you throw at them. KU needs to get over the hump and prove that this isn't a one-year wonder so coaches will feel more secure in their commitment to the university.

It would be nice if our top assistants would get raises and make their salaries similar to what OU and NU are paying. I'm sure that would help keep them here. If KU can put together a few more years of at least 9 wins, they could slowly become a program where coaches would not only want to be a part of, but would also want to stay. Lew has done a great job so far to bring our football program up to speed, I'm sure he will continue to keep us competitive.

Well, it all starts at the top, as they say! And Coach Mangino has made it pretty clear he is not looking to move on, so that has to help stabilize the program.
And Lew Perkins has bumped the salaries since he got here, so you gotta think some more green will be falling their (assistant coaches) way!
That being said, having Dave Doeren and Tim Beck move on really hurts our recruiting of Texas!
