Cliff’s Notes: Bill Self press conference, 2/28/13

Here is the Cliff's Notes version from Self's comments at his press conference today.

Full audio has been posted.

Self says he's interested in which teams might be No. 1 seeds at the end of the year. He doesn't check Joe Lunardi on ESPN every day, but he's still interested. This is probably too early to start looking too closely at those sorts of things, though.

KU agreed with adidas several months ago to sport a camo uniform as part of adidas's marketing campaign in the Big 12 tournament. How much KU wears it in the Big 12 tourney will depend on how KU plays in the uniforms. Self says KU's history and tradition should be what is promoted in its look, but this change will be a one-game exception done for adidas. Self hasn't seen the uniforms for a while, and he probably doesn't like them as much as the normal white uniforms. But for a game or two, it's not that big of a deal in the Big 12 tournament. Sometimes, you have to be a team player. adidas has helped KU quite a bit, so KU will do this to help the company. Those uniforms won't go past the Big 12 tournament.

Self thinks a season could be a success without winning a Big 12 league title. But he wouldn't feel that way about this year's team if it failed to win the Big 12 title because the team started 7-0 in league play. Self doesn't think you can have a special season unless you do well in the NCAA Tournament. KU had 35- and 33-win seasons that weren't special because those teams didn't win as many games in the tourney as maybe they should have. Last year's season was a special year, mostly because of the NCAA Tournament run. This has been a good year no matter how anybody wants to look at it. KU is competing for a conference championship and is ranked high nationally. If fans looked at it before the season, they would have taken —with three games left — the chance for KU to control its own destiny in the league race along with a chance at a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Self says that tiebreakers shouldn't determine conference champions. A split title is the correct way to do it. Self doesn't want to share a conference title, but if two teams have the same record, they should share it.

KU senior Travis Releford has been even better than Self thought he would be. He's been the glue to the team. He gives KU an element of toughness. He's as important as anybody.

Self is aware of the racist and threatening tweets that were sent by Iowa State students after the game to Elijah Johnson. Self thinks there's no place for that, but Self doesn't think Johnson and Self are going to dwell on it. Self and Johnson talked about it this morning. The Iowa State student body responded in a way to leave no doubt as to where it stood on the issue. That's good enough for Self. That was an unbelievable basketball game with the best performance by an individual since Self got here. The postgame stuff shouldn't take away from that. Unfortunately, there are idiots around in all different areas. That shouldn't take away from 13,000 people at the game that cheered their team on. Self has always enjoyed going to ISU, and these idiots won't change that. Self is excited that Johnson has his mojo back.

Self has not been contacted by the Big 12 to be told what the errors were at the end of the KU-ISU game. Self thinks we're on the verge of crossing the line that isn't good. KU benefited from a no-call. There have been many times teams have benefited from a no-call. There were other plays in the game, too. This no-call has been under the spotlight because it was at game-point. Self is concerned the league is opening a Pandora's box to have to comment on every controversial call. It's up to the Big 12. Self isn't saying the league is right, wrong or indifferent. He just thinks the league is opening itself up to a lot of different things. Self thinks the response seemed stern based on how it had been handled in the past. Other issues were handled privately, and this was handled publicly.

Self thinks it would be best if all referees were under one umbrella instead of being overseen by each conference. It's human nature, but referees get used to certain leagues and certain types of play. Self would like to see KU get officials from other conferences, because in the NCAA Tournament, you end up getting two or three guys a game that have not seen you all year. Sometimes, you can get too comfortable with a certain style of play through the regular season. Geography comes into play when assigning officials, but guys in North Carolina do call games in Lubbock, Texas, and guys in Spokane, Wash., sometimes call games in Lawrence.

Johnson got no easy points against ISU. He made plays. If he doesn't make every play down the stretch, then KU loses the game. He did it for five or six straight plays when the stakes were the absolute highest. Johnson playing like that for KU the rest of the way is imperative. ISU made 17 threes and goes 29 of 34 from the line, has seven turnovers and Ben McLemore scores 7 points. How do you win that game? Self said you have different guys step up. Self didn't realize how much the guys respected Johnson until after the game. He's never seen a group of guys more happy for someone than when he saw Johnson's teammates after the ISU game.

Teams have guarded Ben McLemore a certain way through league play. He's had his ups and downs. He's just a young kid that's still learning. Self thinks McLemore will be a better player moving forward after experiencing the struggles in the ISU game.

KU's young guys love the seniors. Self thinks it's cool to have guys that bust their butts for four or five years then just want to end at the end of their careers, even if that means deferring at times to a freshman like McLemore.

KU played great early in the first West Virginia then puttered around after that. WVU's pressure bothered KU.

WVU coach Bob Huggins is a great coach. He's a hall of fame coach. His kids play as hard as any kids in the country. He's as good as college basketball has as far as a complete package in coaching goes.

Self has heard from a lot of players after winning No. 500. Tyrel Reed and Brady Morningstar texted Self yesterday. It's unbelievable the run KU has had of late. Self is not that sentimental, but looking back, he thinks it's pretty cool how many people played a role in 500 wins. The players deserve all the credit. Self said he doesn't anticipate getting another 500 wins, because he'd have to coach for a long time to get that.

Those uni's are UGLY!! Thank goodness we wont be wearing them for the NCAA tourny.

And you cannot see the numbers and names very well from the distance the camera has.

Agreed...at least the white uniforms are not as bad - signed by another LS Jayhawk.

I liked Self's polite way of addressing the adidas/uniform issue. He somehow managed to not use the words "godawful" and "embarrassing" to describe them. Hopefully we team up with Nike once our adidas contract ends this year.

4

Phil Leister 1 year, 6 months ago

Jesse, did he say it would be a "one-game exception done for adidas" as you wrote, or be worn for a "game or two". I know I'm splitting hairs, but if he said it will be a one-game exception, and then said it will depend on how well we play in them, it seems like an inconsistent message.

0

Jesse Newell 1 year, 6 months ago

He said both. He talks about it at the 45-second mark of the audio posted if you want to hear his direct words.

texashawk10 1 year, 5 months ago

From what I've read elsewhere, KU will wear them in the Big 12 tourney so KU will wear those for 1-3 games.

0

JayHawkFanToo 1 year, 6 months ago

With all due respect, why in the world would we want the President to get involved in the KU uniform issue?

0

bad_dog 1 year, 6 months ago

Yes, and only 99,574 signatures needed to reach the magic 100,000 required...

I do not like the new uniforms; I can see why HC Self would not want to wear them more than once. Any camouflage pattern/color other than the ones the military wears looks kind of girly, in my opinion. You can form your own opinion:

We barely beat out Cinci and UCLA in this picture for the stupidest looking shorts. Like, ever.

0

I would argue that Notre Dame's looks the worst overall. I mean, geez! Look at their socks & shoes even!!!!

0

JayDocMD 1 year, 5 months ago

I guess... although I'm realizing this is kind of like arguing about whose turd looks better.

0

jaybate 1 year, 5 months ago

Okay, get out your bricks and bats.

I am even shocking myself here.

I like these uniforms.

Here is why.

Solid top and cami-pant embody the XTReme Economic Asymmetry of our perma-war, regime-changing, perma-torturing times. I pray for peace, equitable wealth distribution, an end to perma war and an end to perma torture. But these uniforms portray that reality of our times that haunt us (and that endangers all we hold dear as a republic). And the uniforms somehow embody this national nightmare in a jaunty way.

The tops are designed to look good with, or without T shirts. And so different players on the same team could choose between straps and t-shirt style, or straps with a t-shirt.

The shoes, socks and uniforms are integrated at last.

There is enough ornamentation to keep the uniforms from being boring, but not too much to distract from the basic color scheme and bold school names.

This is new and good.

Tone outs were new and bad.

Now, having given this favorable critique, I would much prefer burning these and keeping our more traditional uniforms.

But this would be a change I could live with.

The idea of all this trial of new uniforms is to try to come with a style that will translate into kids buying the whole integrated uniform look and wearing it on the street, at school, on the playground, and at the beach and lake.

Oh, well.

I prefer the traditional uniforms.

But this uniform at least looks like a designer worked on them.

Very post-post modern in their design language.

But if KU is the 1 seed in the Big12 they will be wearing white uni's stating they are the home team as the upper seed.

So what will the whites look like?

I have liked KU's uni's from Adidas but this pushes the limit as to waht is acceptable. I am not saying that KU should go back to Nike, cause they have had some really dozzies too this year, i.e. what Texas wore on gameday vs KU.

Can't a school just say "this is what we are going to wear and if you don't like it we will wear a local print shops jersey."??

Insanity!!!

Here are the white ones. They are definitely better than the blue!

Agree to drop ADIDAS, but I don't think Nike is all that much better - have you seen the trash heap they turned Oregon's court/arena into? I'd be interested in seeing a KU-Under Armour relationship (granted, there would have to be some additions/substitutes for football).

1

Kyle Sybesma 1 year, 5 months ago

Phil Knight, owner of Nike, is an Oregon alum. It would be like saying you don't want Under Armour because of what they did to Maryland. UA owner is an alum of Maryland. Nike is more attractive to recruits.

0

Benjamin Simon 1 year, 5 months ago

Understood, but why be in Nike's hip pocket in the same way we are in ADIDAS' pocket right now? Contracting with Nike will yield the same results. UA is the only one of the three that hasn't gone gimmick-ey, and as the third horse in a two-horse race, I doubt UA is looking to rock the boat in the same way Nike and ADIDAS are. Unless Russell or Hanes or Fruit of the Loom decide to get into collegiate uniforms...

I like how Self touched on the "no call" subject. Translation...the refs gave us the shaft, then one no-call goes our way (which seems to be a flop) and it gets all this attention. Why not go back and review the whole game? You are all going to regret giving in to the espn spotlight.

I think new refs would be good to see, I felt this crew let it get too physical early then was calling light bumps late; it didnt suprise me when I later learned one of the crew worked the NC game last year.

0

Steve Gantz 1 year, 6 months ago

I agree with just about everything you wrote except "which seems to be a flop". I just went back and watched it over and over again. While my heart said block, my mind keeps saying charge. Really didn't look like a flop.

1

Brad Farha 1 year, 5 months ago

Agreed. We got the benefit of a very bad call by the refs. It was a charge. But....Self is right. So many questionable calls throughout the game.

Some more recent developments:

1 KU's two games against OSU were the only games this season in which Coach Self drew up plays without first consulting his Coach Eddie Sutton Bobblehead Doll.

2 He was afraid that the doll would look at the OSU games as possible conflicts of interest.

3 Coach Self is pretty sure that Coach Iba is looking down from Heaven in appreciation of the tenacious defense and controlled pace we have seen in College Basketball this year.

4 In honor of the low scoring games this year, the KU-WVU game will be "Turn Back the Clock to 1936" Details are as follows:

4a The shot clock will be turned off.

4b There will be no 3 point line.

4c The game will be played in a 3-D holographic representation of Hoch Auditorium.

4d A holographic image of KU Alum Paul Endacott will grace the Alumni Section.

4e Mr. Endacott will not be allowed to play out of fear that he might cause the combined score to surpass 100 points.

4f Adidas will be providing some really short shorts. Jerseys will feature KANSAS in block numerals.

0

TxJyHwk 1 year, 5 months ago

Just curious ...how do you spell KANSAS with numerals?

0

BPSkelly 1 year, 6 months ago

One thing that gets missed with "refereeing issues" is the fact that ISU jacked up 41 3s and yet somehow also managed to get 34 FT attempts. Im not overly bothered by that, as we all know home cooking is home cooking. While to me it was a bad no call (either way), we've all pointed out other discrepancies throughout the game as well. It is fair to say it wasnt a great night for the refs. It does bother me they're concerning themselves with that one play, as big as it was even.

At least those crazy @$$ unis will only be around one game. And it appears from that link that ours and Cincys are the closest to the 'regular' uniforms we have of the bunch. Those 'neon yellow marker' jerseys look like they've been simmering in radioactive waste. Hopefully we wont be blinded by those in the Big 12 tournament.

Can anyone tell me what the Iowa State student body did in response to the threatening tweets?

I pray that the recruits won't be too quick to judge our unis.

I think the uniforms are bad. We need to stick to crimson and blue. Win the game and go on down the road.

0

Please email Iowa Sate's athletic director about what you think regarding their lack of a public statement about their fan's behaviour.

jpb@iastate.edup>jpb@iastate.edu>

I know Self is doing the correct PR thing, but how they acted should be getting as much attention in the press as the poor refereeing. Not just the local press.

0

Phoghorn 1 year, 5 months ago

I can see the headline now..."Jayhawks to wear camouflage in hunt for NCAA Title."

0

texashawk10 1 year, 5 months ago

Anybody else notice Notre Dame's unis are the same color as Digger Phelp's highlighter.

I know most people disagree, but Adidas is the better choice. They pay more than Nike and they outfit EVERY team KU has unlike Nike who only outfits football and both basketball teams while the other programs have to negotiate their own deals. The extra revenue from Adidas does help fund the non revenue programs and for a school that doesn't have unlimited resources in the athletic department that is a big deal.

0

Ron Prichard 1 year, 5 months ago

I'm all for having fun with alternative uniforms every now and then. I loved the '88 throwback unis and was one of the few that thought the monotone blue unis weren't that bad. However, these are absolutely horrible. Why anyone with Adidas would think these are appealing is beyond me. Surely these can't generate that much additional revenue for Adidas. Who besides a crack smoker is going to buy this, and we all know crack smokers can't afford to buy new basketball shorts.

LMFAO they cannot be serious about those unis. Did they even ask anybody if they liked them before doing this? Has anybody in the world said they like these yet?

They look like toddler jammies. No, worse, they look like Zubaz. All we need adidas to do now is force everyone to grow mullets and wear mesh half-shirts.

NFW you could get me in those! I would sooner play naked.

Can somebody please tell me what the penalty would be for outright refusing to wear these ridiculous clown suits? I'm sure KU could win this one in a court of law. One of you lawyers enlighten me. Is this defamation of character or something similar? We'll be the laughing stock of the nation! We're already a laughing stock to anyone who's seen these photos. Even if we lost in court it would be worth it to refuse. No amount of money is worth this humiliation.

Please DO NOT wear these! I will be so embarrassed if you do.
