Les Miles touts ‘winners’ KU signed in 2021 class

Kansas football coach Les Miles provided his thoughts on the 18 players the Jayhawks signed on Wednesday, Dec. 16, the first day that Class of 2021 recruits could make their pledges official.

“Here’s what we did. We went out to get guys that were winners. Guys that have played and competed and understood what it was like to win," Miles said, before fielding questions.

Les Miles on KU’s late 4th down try at ISU

Following his Kansas football team’s 41-31 loss at Iowa State, head coach Les Miles explained why he wanted to go for it on 4th down in the fourth quarter, with his team down three.

“I thought the offense played spotty at times but really got in a groove late in the game,” Miles began.

KU trailed 34-31 with a little more than four minutes left when a Carter Stanley incompletion from the KU 37-yard line ended the drive.

“In the back half of the game I would have rather had the ball in our hands than their hands, and the opportunity to go for it on 4th down when your quarterback is hot,” Miles said. “It didn’t turn out.”

Kansas football coach Les Miles explained following his team’s 31-13 defeat at No. 25 Oklahoma State on Saturday what led to a change at quarterback in the third quarter.

“We were just looking for a spark. See if we could get something going,” Miles said. “We like Carter. Carter’s good.”

KU played Manny Miles at QB for the entire third quarter before returning to Stanley in the fourth. Les Miles said Stanley will remain KU’s starting quarterback moving forward.

Although Kansas football players and coaches left Saturday's 29-24 home loss to West Virginia discouraged by the result,'s Benton Smith and Shane Jackson discuss why the showing actually was a promising sign for the Jayhawks.

KU fell behind by two touchdowns but managed to have at least a chance of winning the game on the final play of the fourth quarter.

At least a few minutes during every contact practice are set aside for the drill, during which Miles calls out the names of each participant — one in blue for the offense and one in white for the defense — before each battle.

Miles first introduced the drill to the team in the spring.
