Devonte’ Graham recalls social media doubters after helping KU win outright Big 12 title

Kansas basketball seniors Clay Young, Devonte’ Graham and Svi Mykhailiuk, at the conclusion of an emotional and rewarding Senior Night at Allen Fieldhouse, discussed all that went into the 80-70 victory over Texas — and then some.

Fresh off of securing an outright Big 12 championship for the Jayhawks, Graham recalled the doubt regarding this team that he observed on social media earlier in the season.

“I don’t know if everybody seen that, but I seen it,” Graham said of a message that suggested he and his teammates didn’t deserve to wear the Kansas uniform. “It just put like a little chip on my shoulder and just let me go out and lead better and want it more. I know we all wanted it, obviously. But I think the negative comments and seeing people doubt us definitely made us have a chip on our shoulder.”

Devonte’ Graham, Lagerald Vick talk about big performances vs. Syracuse

MIAMI — While Devonte’ Graham called Clay Young the MVP of the game, the senior point guard had a pretty good case for that himself.

On a night the KU offense struggled, Graham poured in a career-high-tying 35 points, adding five assists and helping KU break down the Syracuse zone in key moments.

“Coach kept telling me to be aggressive,” Graham said. “Just trying to give us a spark.”

KU, normally known for its balance, had only two other players in double-figures. Svi Mykhailiuk chipped in 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting while Lagerald Vick added 20 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists, often playing the role of set-up man in the middle of the zone.

“It just felt good making plays for others,” Vick said. "Just sticking to what Kansas do"

Bill Self talks about KU’s defense, Devonte’ Graham’s performance vs. Syracuse

MIAMI — While the high-powered KU offense has already broken 100 points twice this year, the hallmark of the team in its biggest games has come on the other side of the ball.

After holding Kentucky to just 61 points in the Champions Classic, the Jayhawks again scratched out a win, topping Syracuse, 76-60, Saturday in Miami.

“You can’t do much better than holding them to 21 points (in the first half),” said KU coach Bill Self.

It wasn’t the best offensive game for KU, but that didn’t quite carry over to everyone.

Lagerald Vick posted 20 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists in the win, while Devonte’ Graham tied a career-high with 35 points.

“We’re better when we have balance,” Self said. “But on a night where basically we didn’t have much going on, (Graham) needed to do that."
