Thomas Robinson, Tyshawn Taylor top Georgetown ratings

1. Thomas Robinson: Withstood some hacks that didn’t draw whistles and didn’t lose his cool on his way to 20 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots.

2. Tyshawn Taylor: Got to the paint almost at will, collapsing the defense. Made all three three-point shots and totaled 16 points with three assists.

3. Travis Releford: Had a key put-back on a Robinson miss, dove to claim a loose ball, hit a pair of late free throws and made Georgetown’s Hollis Thompson work hard for his 14 points.

4. Elijah Johnson: Made what his coach called the play of the game when he took his man from the top of the key and drove to the hoop under control for a bucket late in the shot clock that KU up, 65-60, with 1:06 left. Made just 1 of 6 three-pointers.

5. Jeff Withey: Snagged six rebounds but fouled out in just 13 minutes.

6. Justin Wesley: Has the quickness that enables him to hang in there defensively against athletic opponents, but needs to do a better job of minimizing fouls (four in 13 minutes).

7. Naadir Tharpe: Scored a bucket on a “no, no, no, yes,” teardrop in the land of giants.

8. Conner Teahan: Had plenty of open looks but cashed in on just 1 of 5 three-point shots.

9. Kevin Young: Had a rebound and a steal in seven minutes.

Last time Keegan picked TT as the player of the game and I disagreed; this time it's the opposite: as great as TR was, I thought TT was the best player on the floor for KU. Thank God his cramps didn't cost KU, and hopefully he'll be fully recovered in time for the UCLA game. That was the Tyshawn we've all been waiting/wanting to see for a long time. Let's hope it's the first of many.

I agree actorman. That's the Taylor I hope we see more often than not. This was a much better game than he had against UK. He had the worst 20+ point performance I've ever seen against UK. He played like a team leader this game, not like a guy trying to impress scouts with 3 of 13 shooting and selfish play.

NBA scouts will be all over him if he plays more games like he did last night. If he goes back to selfish play, he'll be playing pro ball in Siberia.

Good job, Tyshawn. Travis, your game looked much better last night. A victory vs. a very energetic, determined, persistent, well-coached young squad. That win will help us in the grand scheme of end-of-season rankings, because Georgetown is bound to finish much higher than a predicted 8th in their league. If they keep a positive attitude, that bunch might serve as giant killers before and during March Madness. Jayhawks offered up their own brand of persistence last night. And Bill Self continues to see what various lineups can do. On a night when his shooting was off, Conner stepped up as an interior ingredient, boxing out for some of those lobs to Thomas.

Tyshawn had a good game. He is finally taking charge of this group. Hope it continues on a consistent basis. I thought Travis had some key plays--but hey, that's what HCBS said, too. I also, think that T-Rob played a lot smarter on defense--something that has to be done night in and night out. We lose a lot without him in there. Good luck tonight, Jayhawks!

Here's a crazy prediction. Mr. Zero will be the #1 player against UCLA.

Don't fight it Keeg party. He's our best player. I know it took a hard swallow and a Tylenol for you to rank him over TT and Elijah this week, but if you stand back a little and watch, it's pretty clear that Z is superior to Taylor and EJ every night.

The wins go through Robinson. I can't believe neither of you have picked Z for your Hawk to Rock yet. It's kind of funny actually. Get off the "he's due" bandwagon and get on the Z train.

Prediction: One of you picks him, finally, as your Hawk to Rock for tonight. Welcome to basketball season.

I agree. TT had a excellent game, but look at it simply: when TT was off the floor with cramps, we had a +3 margin. Take out TRob and we are simply not anywhere close to the same team.

I don't mean to say in anyway that we can win without TT. We NEED Taylor to play at the top of his game night in and night out. He's vital to the success of this team. However, when he's out we can scrap and claw with the other guards on the floor. EJ and Tharpe both have the ability to make plays and break down the defense. Without TRob, we simply can't compete at near the same level. He's hands down the most valuable player on this team.

I fully expect him to be logging 35+ minutes a night (assuming he avoids foul trouble, of course).

Withey was absolutely hosed last night by the refs. 3 mystery calls - especially the last one. Unreal. At least then it got more PT for Wesley & Young which they need. AND to get to listen to Jay Bilas instead of Dickie V. was great!

About listening to Jay instead of Dickie---amen, brother! Bilas and Rafferty were funny and fun to listen to.

I wish we could get Lee Corso. He would've gone "F"ing crazy over that last call.

Yeah, that call was horrendous! It was even worse than the officiating for the rest of the game, which is saying something. What an absolute joke of an officiating crew. And I'm not saying they were biased against KU; they were at least an equal-opportunity disaster.

Agreed. They weren't biased against KU they just sucked and calls went against both teams pretty equally. I did find it really aggravating though watching T-Rob getting mugged in the paint repeatedly the entire game with no whistle and then Withey picks up 3 fouls for just... well, nothing?

The last foul on Withey was easily the worst call I've ever seen. I have no idea what the official thought he saw. It was just an atrocious call.

Withey put himself in bad positions for most of the other 4 fouls, so fouling out (and having to sit before then) is mostly his fault. But that last call..... to quote the Bilas... "was lame."

I'm slowly adjusting watching this young team vs. our superteam last year. It's going to be fun watching Releford, EJ, and Withey mature. I thought EJ and Releford took a step forward last night. They both seem like they're nervous in their new shoes.

"5. Jeff Withey: Snagged six rebounds but fouled out in just 13 minutes."

Yikes, Jeff! We all know the last foul was a rip, but I hope fouling out helps Jeff get his act together. We need him in the game.

Jeff has to realize a few things:

  1. Big men don't get breaks on calls.

  2. Jeff has a unique body and unique playing style. Differing refs will interpret his game uniquely and some will not favor Jeff in the least. Nothing personal, just how they see it.

  3. Jeff will have to adjust his play. In some areas he needs to reserve his play and save it for bursts of greatness. He tires too quickly and makes some bad decisions. He has to realize that he's a big man and once he commits a few dumb fouls in a game the refs will chastise him with gremlin foul calls (like his 5th).

Great defensive performance. One problem. That Princeton offense was very exhausting to defend against and will have worn down everyone that played any significant minutes last night. With the UCLA game at 4:30 today (Hawaii time), the Hawks aren't going to be as quick on their feet, having had only about 19 hours of rest. We should win, but I hope we can get a good lead against UCLA to end the game, because it would be nice to give the starters a little bit of rest for game three, whomever that may be, on Wednesday. Just wish KU's game today would have started a few hours later. Guess ESPN wanted the earlier start to gain a larger audience, especially on the East Coast, even though it's between Midwest and West Coast opponents.

Let's go, Hawks. Time to make bear rugs out of the Bruins.
