Composed Tyrel Reed earns top Jayhawk honor

1. Tyrel Reed: Excellent composure, tough rebounding, clutch shooting and solid aggressiveness driving to the hoop. He didn’t get caught up in the nonsense of the evening and showed where his heart is when after the buzzer sounded he made sure to thank the KU fans who booed every time Cal villain Jorge Gutierrez touched the ball. Totaled 18 points and seven rebounds. 2. Markieff Morris: Compensating for the absence of his brother, Markieff contributed 21 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.

3. Josh Selby: Made 3 of 4 three-pointers on his way to an 18-point, four-assist, three-turnover, two-steal night. Scored 13 of his 18 in the first half. Had two shots blocked.

4. Thomas Robinson: Has to be sneakier about being an enforcer or he’s going to start getting tossed from games. Drew an intentional foul in the first half, a technical in the second. Contributed seven points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes.

5. Travis Releford: Drew another start and again played solid post defense. At least in the art of keeping his man from catching the ball, Releford might be the team’s best post defender, a problem considering he’s just 6-foot-5.

6. Marcus Morris: Was playing fine until he lost his cool, elbowed Cal’s Harper Kamp in the face and got the ejection he deserved.

7. Tyshawn Taylor: Has regressed into wild player he was as an underclassman. It’s as if he’s trying to show he has as much talent as Josh Selby.

8. Brady Morningstar: Silly technical at the end, slapping the ball out of Cal player’s hands and into stands. Yo, what’s with that, dawg?

9. Elijah Johnson: Needs to slide his feet better on defense to earn more playing time. Whistled for two personals in seven minutes.

The Keegan Ratings: Season Standings
1. Markieff Morris (88 points)
2. Marcus Morris (87 points)
3. Tyshawn Taylor (85 points)
4. Thomas Robinson (74 points)
5. Tyrel Reed (58 points)
6. Brady Morningstar (54 points)
7. Travis Releford (47 points)
8. Mario Little (34 points)
9. Elijah Johnson (33 points)
10. Jeff Withey (23 points)
11. Josh Selby (18 points)
12. Royce Woolridge (3 points)

Note: Once Big 12 season begins, both overall and conference Keegan ratings standings will be kept to take into account Selby's late arrival into the rotation.

gutierrez flagrantly fouled thomas and should have been thrown out

Glad you noticed Tyrel. Big rebounding game from the wing.

I agree with you Tom...Reed was the man !!!

He has gotten so much better over the years. We're gonna really miss his leadership after he graduates.

hawk316 10 years, 11 months ago

I agree, KU. I'm pleased to see how many fans are finally beginning to see what a solid player Tyrel is. As you may know, there have been those in the past who did not seem to think that he deserved very much playing time. Boy, has he proved them wrong!

TRob's technical in the second was a semi-bogus response to the fact that the refs couldn't tell what the hell happened. I clearly saw Gutierrez throw a weak punch at TRob's face at the end. He should have been tossed and probably suspended for another game.

That being said, we have to cool down. I love TRob's passion, but, dude, seriously... stop with the elbows. This game is about control more than anything.

Control with the ball.
Control with shooting.
Controlling your defender.
And controlling your emotions.

Aggressiveness and tenacity are extremely important in the game of basketball, but there is a fine line between aggressive behavior and dirty play. Keep that aggressiveness, TRob, but keep it under control, and you will absolutely dominate this league. Especially with your talent and apparent work ethic.

Stay controlled and you will stay a winner.

Respectfully disagree about Marcus....seconds before,he was getting pushed around before the T. He extended those big arms to make space. He didn't swing. The refs decided they would take care of Goliath before he hurt David. Same thing with Robinson. Watch the film again.

patrick_e 10 years, 11 months ago

Morris clearly went for the guy's head. He deserved to be tossed, even if he was provoked from some earlier event.

Robinson did not deserve his technical foul. He did nothing wrong other than hold onto the ball while Mr. G was trying to rape him. Unfortunately, when the refs don't know what to do in a situation like that, they commonly call a double-technical.

Ron Franklin 10 years, 11 months ago

Well since they showed the replay 10 times, it was obvious that second elbow from Marcus was flagrant. He intentionally drove that elbow into the chin.....if it were a Missouri player doing that to Kansas we'd be calling for his head.

NJHAWK 10 years, 11 months ago

Though he was getting pushed around, Marcus should not have lost his cool. Marcus is better than that. He has taken over the leadership role and as a leader of this team he needs to stay calm and show his aggression by scoring points or on defense (instead of retaliation). I am sure that he will learn from this lesson. Cal players were instructed to be physical against our bigs. TRob was frustrated too. I am glad that Keif filled the void.

jayhawkintx73 10 years, 11 months ago

The second elbow was obviously flagrant, but the refs could have prevented it by calling fouls before it got to that point. Doesn't matter now. We won. The Cali tried to play a dirty baiting game, and couldn't take advantage of it.

Gutierrez is a punk. He needs to play basketball in the prison system, and probably will.

I thought Taylor looked better this game than last. I think Tayor, as the whole team, is adjusting to Selby's offensive capacity. A couple more games and he'll be back to 100%.

Fairgrove, precisely my thoughts re Jorge G. He and that -Frison kid must be daily nightmares for Mike Montgomery. Our players have got to keep their composures when bumping heads with such bullyboys. TRob, esp., is likely to be provoked constantly this season. Self has the leeway to handle TT's backslide in the most effective way possible. Place his fanny on the pine until he can regain his handle at the helm. If he doesn't settle down quickly, I look to see Josh take over the point guard duties soon. Tyrel Reed last night: WOW! Markieff, too.

Sorry about the triple post. Browser problems today.

Gutierrez is a punk. He was out of control from the very beginning of the game. T-Rob didn't do anything to deserve a tech IMO.That being said, Gutierrez has a weak ground and pound game and should work on that before he goes to jail.

Scott Smetana 10 years, 11 months ago

I thought Gutierrez was so pathetic, he was hillarious. He couldn't play to save his life. He created drama everywhere. He created the whole dogpile chaos when nothing happened. He truly belongs to play in a prison playground.

I thought TRob was incredibly consistent, and deserves to be #2 or #3 on the list. The twins have moments of awesomeness, but have huge moments of lapse. TRob, Reed, and Selby are Rocks!! TT will be fine as our team finds chemistry. He has a good knack of drawing the foul, which they didn't call for him last night. Sadly, that skill can take you far (ala Hansborough). TT should focus on his defense right now. (ala RussRob)

Last year's Cal team was good. They had talent and size. This year's club is short on talent and the Jayhawks should have buried them from the opening tipoff. All Cal could do to derail the Jayhawk Express was to turn the game into a brawl - to get the Jayhawks to lose some composure - and they partially succeeded.

Thanks to Tyrel Reed for not letting this mess turn into a loss. As for Marcus, Morningstar, and Robinson...I hope that Coach Self invites them for a visit to his office and that Coach goes a little Frank Martin on them. They deserve it.

Christopher Johnson 10 years, 11 months ago

"Yo, what's with that, dawg?"??????

You're an old fat white guy . . . stop with that crap.

Those announcers and officials were obviously Pac10 idiots. How did they miss the punch on the replay? Even the announcers ignored it and acted like nothing happened.

Lacy Mohler 10 years, 11 months ago

Thought Keegan's top 4 were pretty much a toss-up--any of them could have been #1. Geat play.

TT had some problems--but the kid played to exhaustion last night. He had very lttle left to give. He isn't RussRob by any means, but very few are.

The team really--really--missed Mario last night.

Is the entire Cal team on work release?

KGphoto 10 years, 11 months ago

I picked him as my Hawk to Rock, and I'm sticking with him. Selby gets extra bonus points because he is the straw that stirs the drink. Two games in, and he is clearly the best player on the team. I give extra bonuses for spectacular plays, and his steal, behind-the-back dribble, and lob was one of several. He is just so fast with the ball. You have to throw in a bonus for how dangerous he looks, and how the other team is forced to react to that. Tyrel's success was directly tied to that. He and the team just need to be fine tuned into perfect harmony over the next few games.

Just as importantly, Tommy Chong Keegan, is that your top 8 now does indeed appear to be THE top 8. Bill Self's top 8. And we know he's gonna stick with that more and more as the season progresses.

TR was definitely MVP of last night's game. T-Rob did not deserve the Tech in the first 1/2. The 2nd half Tech was given because the game was getting out of hand. T-Rob played very good with the exception of some missed bunnies & passes on the Offensive end. It was great hearing the Jayhawk nation in Haas Pavillion booing Guiterez every time he touched the ball after the scrum. Nothing like getting booed in your own house. Rock Chalk!! F-Texas!!!

Martin Shupert 10 years, 11 months ago

Taylor is falling back into the "I don't know what my role is... wah wah" crap that he went through before. Your role is to help the team, not be the star, TT. Reed has always been good, but now we see just how much more he can contribute with a real point guard on the team. Selby's slashing and shots from the outside reduces every team's ability to cover Reed. Ironically, the arrival of Selby will dramatically increase the minutes and effectiveness for Reed. Why would we ever want Taylor out there in the final minutes? You can't count on him to make a free throw, move the ball, protect the ball, or defend. He's fine to fill in when Selby needs a rest. Otherwise, keep the head case off the court.

Greg Lux 10 years, 11 months ago

T-Robs T in the second half was B.S. He didn't do anything but lay on the floor and hold onto the ball ... The ref's over reacted ( not unusual ). The T in the first have as also B.S.. The ball had gone through the basket and the Cal player kept pushing T-Rob out of bounds .. Yes he could have handled it better but the T was not called for .. If anything the Cal player should have been called for a foul. T-Rob improves every game and if he continues he will be a huge asset by conference time He actually already is a huge asset he will just be a Bigger one.

I wanted to get something off my chest, so for the record--------

Last night on the post-game discussion, I called Gutierrez a "Mexican boy," and was accused of using a racist remark. BTW, I ain't racist but that's what happens when one assumes. So, I will correct myself and say that Gutierrez is a "punk." Thanks FairgroveJayhawk---you beat me to the punch----no pun intended. Like PikesPeakSmitty said, "Gutierrez was so pathetic, he was hilarious." I watch a re-broadcast of the game today on FSN. Okay, when the officials went back to watch the monitors, how could any of the three not see Gutierrez throw the punch on Robinson when both were on the ground? Unbelievable. But that's where everyone lost their cool for a few minutes. Thankfully, the Jayhawks got their "mojo" back and stuck it to them. Those Jayhawks coming off the bench, whether it's Brady or not, need to go out and "just play----just play, baby!" Everything else will take care of itself. Game ball goes to Tyrel. I would take Tyrel anywhere, anyplace and he would be in my starting lineup. I am starting to like Selby, though. He had some phenomenal plays! Happy Holidays and Felix Navidad!

They got punked and fought back. The other games where they were played tough inside were the squeaker games and the upcoming teams have seen this and will keep trying until it stops working or backfires. The game against Michigan, Big 10 style, may show us the result of the Cal game. Reed has showed some talent around the hoop both scoring and rebounding. He is a good three point shooter and has enough athleticism to be a good defender. If Mr. Whithey would help it would mean better defense at times. An Al Davis reference? Nice.
