Markieff leads Jayhawks against Colorado State

1. Markieff Morris: Exploited the undersized Rams with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. His six offensive boards set a career-high. 2. Tyshawn Taylor: Did an excellent job of keeping CSU’s guards from penetrating. Even though they aren’t known as great penetrators, he deserves credit. Totaled 12 points, six assists, two blocked shots and two steals.

3. Thomas Robinson: Totaled seven points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, including two in a row, in 17 minutes. Unfortunately, the early season improvement from the charity stripe appears to have been a mirage. Made just 1 of 7 freebies. He has made 1 of his last 10.

4. Mario Little: The guy is one clever scorer. He really knows how to create space with jab steps and other fakes with his feet and upper body. Had eight points and five rebounds in 17 minutes.

5. Elijah Johnson: Has improved his jumper from a year ago. He made both attempts, both three-pointers. Added four rebounds, two assists and a steal, but also had two turnovers.

6. Brady Morningstar: He had four steals. Ain’t no thang. He does that all the time. He turned one of them into a one-handed jam. Ain’t seen that in a grip.

7. Marcus Morris: Suffered sprained ankle, was helped off the floor, and spent a protracted period in the locker-room facilities. Returned to the game much later in the first half, but exhibited neither the same lateral quickness nor vertical prowess henceforth. Was held to single-figure scoring for the first time this season.

8. Tyrel Reed: Took 12 shots and scored 11 points. Turned it over twice.

9. Travis Releford: Bad early turnover sent him to the bench for a long time. Hustled when he returned and finished with four points, five boards, a blocked shot and two steals in 11 minutes.

10. Jeff Withey: He didn’t look smooth, physical or particularly coordinated in his six minutes of action. He’ll have better days.

11. Royce Woolridge: Played the final minute, jacked a three from the corner and missed.

The Keegan Ratings: Season Standings
1. Tyshawn Taylor (78 points)
2. Marcus Morris (74 points)
3. Markieff Morris (72 points)
4. Thomas Robinson (58 points)
5. Brady Morningstar (45 points)
6. Tyrel Reed (43 points)
7. Travis Releford (37 points)
8. Mario Little (34 points)
9. Elijah Johnson (29 points)
10. Jeff Withey (22 points)
11. Royce Woolridge (3 points)

I call Brady's 0 assists in 24 minutes 'ain't nothing' for a guard.

So what? When Brady does get assists, as he has in most of the games this year, the haters pretend it doesn't matter because any idiot can get assists, right? This time he gets a bunch of steals, so you decide steals don't matter. Face it, you're never going to give the kid credit for anything.

Mario's FT shot is as pretty as TRob's is ugly. Both guys played well tonight though.

Hope everyone gets healthy. Couldn't believe how quiet it was while Marcus was on the floor---even the ESPN guys were quiet for several seconds. Appreciated that---as as TV fan it made me feel like I was there. Dickie Vee would have been carrying on about Duke or North Carolina while Marcus was down--probably wouldn't have even noticed.

Just as he has done in other aspects of his game, looks like TRob needs to slow down when he is at the foul line.

We're having a tough time playing to the level of our competition. I hate how our competition isn't tougher. It looks to me like we won't play a team that will even make the NCAA tournament (top 68) until Jan 17th (Baylor). That's half way into our season... That stinks!!!

North TX was a tourney team last year I believe, and will make it again this year. Arizona should make the tourney this year. ColoState could make the tourney (consider their league...). UCLA will not. Dont know USC yet...

memphis? and if i remember correctly, like 3 of the first 5 teams we played were expected to win their conferences this year. granted these teams are 14-16 seeds, but those are the teams we should be playing in the first round come tourney time

How come Releford makes a bad turnover and he sits the bench for a long time and when Brady makes a turnover Bill looks the other way? I like Tyrel on the court, but I seriously can't understand why Brady deserves 25 minutes a game. Hopefully Josh eats into Brady's minutes and not Travis'.

I was surprised with this too. I am beginning to like Brady less with every game, and Releford a bit more. I know that currently Brady may have more experience than Releford, but Releford has more energy, and can do a lot more because of that. I believe that giving him an opportunity to improve on the court would pay great dividends in March.

Opposing teams are getting the message. Want to beat the Jayhawks? Send Thomas Robinson to the free throw line. I haven't played basketball in decades, yet I would bet my next paycheck I could make more than one in seven free throws! Good teams win games. Good teams that can make free throws win championships.

"Ain't no thang"? "In a grip"? Lose the hip-hop jive, Tom. You ain't black, and you ain't hip.

So you have to be Black to use slang?

No, but you do usually have to be young. Imagine if you were watching a post-game interview with Bill Self and he said that how foolish and out of place it would sound.

0

patrick_e 2 years, 5 months ago

Sometimes I wish Bill Self would let the players play through mistakes a bit more often. I thought Releford was very active while he was in the game, and affected the game in a positive way on offense and defense.

0

shawjoe 2 years, 5 months ago

Well, some players are allowed to play through their mistakes, while others are not.

Glad Marcus is okay. That would be a real blow if he couldn't come back for a while.

0

ralster 2 years, 5 months ago

Agree. We would have had to "develop" Withey faster, give him more real minutes--and he could be a bigger contributor by March. Just spinning the hypothetical for our benefit... :-)

we won't need withey this year . . .

Travis needs more playing time. I believe Travis and EJ are two guys that will improve the most from seeing more playing time. Both have potential to become phenoms. No one on this team finishes better at the rim than Travis. He can school both twins and TRob near the rim. EJ's athleticism puts him into a league of his own... maybe Josh will join him at that level starting next game.

I give the game ball to EJ for this win. He played through a dislocated shoulder and ended up making the key 3-pt shot that sparked a late KU run to finish off CSU. EJ has been showing just how bad he wants PT. Right now he is our hottest perimeter shooter and the team should run plays to feed EJ for the long ball.

I like "Travis needs more playing time" much better than "Brady should get fewer minutes". Still, should Self give minutes according to need or according to merit? If Selby has to beat somebody out, why not everybody else?

The guy who is going to improve the team the most from seeing more playing time is Selby. For the others, the window of opportunity just closed.

It looks like EJ is ahead of Travis in the merit department. What about putting EJ, Selby and TT on the floor together? Can EJ guard the 3 spot? Can he rebound?

0

oxcaljayhawk 2 years, 5 months ago

Travis has more total points and a higher ppg than Brady despite playing about 80 minutes less than Brady.

0

hawk_of_ages 2 years, 5 months ago

When Travis can play defense up to Self's expectations, he will play more. This really isn't complicated. We already have a great offense, despite all the complaints about Brady failing to light up the scoreboard. There's something to be said for having role players out there.

Withey doesn't seem to have the coordination or hops in close. He brings the ball down. Yesterday, four foot from the hole and double teamed he put it on the floor.

Good to see Releford and EJ coming along. Our guards have to work for some rebounds. Someone, perhaps Self, pointed out a few weeks ago that Travis has a nose for the basket. That can be seen, both in his offense and defense. I look to see each of these guys explode for a breakout game sometime this season.
