Kansas defensive tackle Charles Codey Cole takes questions from media members following head coach David Beaty's National Signing Day press conference on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018 at the Anderson Family Football Complex.

A 6-foot-3, 287-pound native of Ypsilanti, Mich., Charles “Codey” Cole has taken an interesting path to the Big 12. Cole started his career at Tiffin University, an NCAA Division II school in Ohio. After a year there, he enrolled at Butler Community College in El Dorado and earned a three-star rating from Rivals for his performance at the competitive junior college.

Cole brings a high motor and passion for playing football. He’ll add to depth at the defensive tackle spot. The fresher the D-tackles are, the better job they do of tying up blockers so that linebackers can make plays closer to the line of scrimmage. KU has improved its standing in defending the run for two years in a row and will look to continue that trend after a huge improvement in 2017. The Jayhawks allowed 5.67 yards per rush in 2015, 123rd among 128 schools. They improved slightly in 2016 (5.17, 106th of 128) and then took a big leap last season (4.19, 55th of 130).

Cole has said he considers himself fortunate to be practicing daily with such an experienced, talented teammate in Daniel Wise. Cole has something in common with the other five defensive tackles given scholarships in head coach David Beaty’s four recruiting classes: He was recruited from a junior college.
