U.S. Got the gold. Yawn. Spain got the Silver. Yawn.
Russia got the Bronze...
What seemed like a relative guarantee for Argentina ( Stay Healthy = Podium Finish ) turn ugly when in the final seconds Argentina gave away a late lead to the Russians. Even more important in my view is the emergence of one, Alexander "Sasha" Kaun as the countries most dominant post man.
Sure, Kirilenko can do more, but he's a glorified wing.
Mozgov is bigger, but in the biggest game of their teams tournament, Who did the Russians Go to for the majority of the minutes? Sasha. As was the case at Kansas, Sasha didn't always stuff the stat sheets, but his play down low was Key in back to back games against the NBA Gasol's of Spain, and Argentina's Scola. Playing well against NBA opponents, usually means you are deserving of a roster spot, Sasha proved himself deserving again today.
Congratulations Sasha, continue to make us Jayhawks Proud.

I agree about Kaun.
I didn't watch him play a lot of minutes in the olympics, but I did watch him play a few minutes in the olympics. And in the few minutes that he played, the Russian team was much better than in the minutes that he was sitting.
Kaun played well and established himself as the Russians go to post player. The game that I watched he was in early foul trouble, thus on the bench most of the game, but when they brought him in, he made an immediate impact because of his rebounding, his defensive presencem and the fact that the guards trusted him when they threw the ball in to him down low.
He showed good skill inside, as well as some post moves that I never saw him make before. But he still had his trademark horrible free throw shooting.
He definitely could play in the NBA, but he may not really want to...

Shows the direct and indirect effects of Having Danny as a big man coach. Sasha was the only one on the floor in the second half against Spain. Something tells me, he relied upon his time at Kansas, specifically in the Postseason that shows up there. I don't think he would come over now, but it's a shame he never got a chance. Just another Jayhawk who deserved a grander stage.
Glad he had it for a few moments and hope to see more of it in the very near.

He was drafted by Cleveland but he chose to play in Russia for obvious reasons, guaranteed money ($1M), close to family etc. If I recall Cleveland still has his rights if he decides to come and play in NBA

Do you really consider the Cleveland Cavaliers to be an NBA team? LOL
