Dear readers,
Over the past few weeks, many of you have probably been asking yourselves the same questions: Who is this new wordsmith that keeps popping up at KUSports.com and in my morning issue of the Journal-World? Who is this handsome brunet who so effortlessly weaves metaphor and insight into his daily stories?
Some of you have probably used the word "genius." I don't blame you.
I suppose the best way to begin is by introducing myself. My name is Dugan Hartley Arnett, but you guys can feel free to call me "Mr. Arnett." Or "Sir." I was born and raised in Kansas City, Mo., the older of two children. Growing up in the quaint town of Blue Springs, I always knew I was going to go on to do great things. People were always saying things like, "Dugan, you're a special kid. You're going to grow up to do great things." Stuff like that.
I guess I pretty much proved them right. After high school, I went on to graduate from a university about three hours from here. You guys probably haven't heard of it, though. It's called the University of Missouri-Columbia? Apparently, it has a really good football team or something? But it's wonderful to be in Lawrence now, communicating with you fine people.
It's funny, I started here only a few weeks ago, but already I'm feeling incredibly at home. Every time I turn around I'm getting another warm-hearted message from one of you, wishing me luck in my new professional venture. For instance:
"What I want to know is why did the LJW replace (former KU football beat reporter) Ryan Wood with a Methzouri graduate in Dugan Arnett?
"This Dugan guy, the new KU beat writer, is a Hillbilly grad! First Chuckie, now this dork. Can it get any worse?" - konzahawk
"Dugan is a missery grad and looks like hug tool box [sic]. I cant believe KU fans are going to have to put up with his crap all football season." - Nutflush21
My mom read those messages and was horrified. "Why are those people saying such horrible things about you?" she asked. But don't worry. I told her about how you guys were just goofin' on me 'cause I'm the new guy and all.
Anyway, I know what you must be thinking: "Dugan, it's a doggone pleasure to have you here in Lawrence! Is there anything we, the readers of your blog, can do to help you get acclimated?"
Well, yes, as a matter of fact, there is. I love writing stories. Always have. And I'm perpetually looking for ideas. So anytime there's something (or someone) you want to read about, let me know. I am now your official link to Kansas University's football team. I'm kind of like Avon Barksdale in "The Wire", except I don't deal heroin - I deal information. Specifically, information about the Jayhawks football team.
I would like this blog to serve as an open forum (unless, of course, I don't like something you have to say, in which case I will ban you). A place for you to share your thoughts, ideas, feelings, opinions and phone numbers.
Mostly, I just want to let you guys know how happy I am to be a part of your lives. Call me crazy, but I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship.
Sincerely,
Dugan Hartley Arnett

Hey Bill Jones Sr., way to insult the entire population of the state of Kansas. Why are you on this website anyways? I hope you're Arnett's uncle or something. And I really hope you aren't connected with the University with an attitude like that. As Mr. Arnett, that's a good start. Like the title of the blog, love the picture (glad it's a joke), and like the first effort. But you are, of course, on double secret probation due to your shady past. Keep it up and we might stop talking about it. Then again, we might not. But welcome to the KU family anyways.

Fabio-You said:"A little friendly advice. We like a little or even a lot of humor every now and then. A quick example, I would of recomended as the title for this story to be 'Allow myself to introduce....myself.'"While that is pretty funny, I read the real title as a bit more of a sophisticated joke. Perhaps I am way off here, but I couldn't help but to hear the first line of the Rolling Stones "Sympathy for the Devil" in the title:"Please allow me to introduce myselfI'm a man of wealth and tasteI've been around for a long, long yearStole many a man's soul and fate..."I think it is clear to everyone -- especially Mr. Arnett -- that a mizzboo grad will always be viewed as the enemy. And one that has actually been hired to cover the KU football team may seem like nothing less than the devil making his way to the inside. So, it seems to me that Doogie (sorry, but that is just too perfect a nickname -- good work kansaspike) rolled with the opportunity and made a joke out of it... the Stones lyric being a clever setup. Ultimately, he has a job to do, and we want the best reporting possible for our Jayhawks. Truly, it seems, Doogie hopes we will have a bit of sympathy for this missouri devil. If this actually was your intention, Mr. Arnett, then well done. Now just cover the Hawks like the apparent "prize winning" journalist that you are, and we'll get along just fine.Of course, if you don't, these people will strip you down, tie you to a mule, and boot you back to the other side of the stateline.Good luck, Doogs.

By the way, I like how you tried to take the moral high road on homophobia after you "slammed" Kansas fans by calling them functionally retarded. Glad you're here to be our moral compass.

Why is the LJ World hiring MU grads? Because they have one of the best j-schools in the country and it appears that the KU grads they hire won't stick around very long (Wood, Greene, etc.). Half the KU j-school grads are in Chicago, I'm fairly certain. I admit, its interesting that they hired one to write about KU but if he can remain objective, I'm all for it. Certainly Mangino must be, with his close-to-the-vest injury reports, private practices, etc.Overall, this is a very bad choice by the LJW--not necessarily for the quality of writing, but as the biggest public relations gaffe in recent memory. Exactly jhawk23 - one of the KEY (if not THE key) aspects of a good beat-writer is somebody can get "in deep" with the team and coaches to gain perspective that the rest of us can't. A lot of that is being privy to "insider" information, like conversations that are "off the record" and other sensitive stuff that Mangino would never say to the regular media. (Note: I know the writer can't pass all that stuff along, but they certainly use it to indirectly shape their work.) Anybody think that Mangino is going to be as open with a Misery grad as he would if he KNEW that the guy was a die-hard KU fan? I know I wouldn't if I was Mangino. As for being "unbiased" - whether the "jounalists" at the LJW want to believe it or not, the purpose of the hometown sports department of a college town is NOT to be unbiased. The ONLY reason that most people read/subscribe is for info on KU (and they don't want it to be negative).

I would give the guy a chance if I wasn't already completely insulted by the local KC radio coverage by suposed 'unbiassed' hosts. It was the week of the KC/MU game and I was working in Omaha trying to find a KC station I could listen to online to get amped for the game.So the morning host goes on this big rant about growing up MU but being relatively 'unbiased' and invites both KU and MU fans to call in to talk some smack. Somehow only MU fans got through while KU fans kept getting hung up on once they were on the air. He would claim that a KU fan went over the line but then allowed the most vicious comments from MU fans. Then...to add insult to injury every commerial advertised the station as the 'Voice of the Jayhawks'.And personaly, I don't believe reporters can be unbiased. They can try. They can strive. But at the end of the day this guy goes home to Blue Springs.

Welcome "Doogie", A little advice from a '91 Jayhawk who was born in Columbia, but grew up in Kansas and went to KU. I moved back to the Columbia area several years ago, and I take great satisfaction in wearing all my KU Championship shirts (both football and basketball) around Columbia, it sparks some interesting conversation and debate. I just hope that you have Mizzou out of your system and have thrown out all your mizzou shirts, because if you want to keep your new position you should be careful not to carry on like I do in Columbia !!Rock Chalk Champion-Hawk !!!!

PS: by wearing nothing but KU gear around Columbia, one thing i have discovered is that there are more closet KU fans in Columbia than people might think.

Half the J-School grads are in Chicago because that's where they came from (and spent their 4+ years in Lawrence complaining about how they missed their hometown). Did that sound bitter? Really, I was just annoyed...Despite being a KU J-School grad, I will admit Missouri also has a really good program. (But Jonathan, feel free to use that 1st place Hearst finish as often as need be ;)Dugan, welcome to Lawrence. Besides the really obnoxious and rude kusports.com/ljworld.com posters, it's an awesome place.

crimsonlaugh, you must have been surrounded by some different chicago natives than I was at KU -- I had numerous buddies and acquaintances from Chi during my time on the hill and every last one of them couldn't stop raving about how much they loved Larrytown.there are a lot of chicago people that attend and love KU, don't let the few sour ones tarnish your perception of them.

Dugan, nice article. I liked the tongue-in-cheek delivery of your self-effacing introduction. I've no doubt that you will represent the team, the school and the town of Lawrence with a firm, yet fair and even hand.I look forward to more of your musings. As for you being from Miz-who(?), don't sweat it. I know a lot of people that went to that school and they still turned out to be decent individuals. The fact that you have made the leap and are opening a dialog with the fan-base is a sign of your sincerity.Keep up the good work and ignore the ignorant.

Ryan,Glad to hear of your new job. I'm also pleased to know that you'll keep up with us here at KU. I have always enjoyed your insight on KU athletics, as well as your propensity to keep it objective and call out the not-so-objective types here ont he boards. Good luck on your new venture!

Hilarious, bugmenot. Tell me another one. But real quick, did you hear the one about the team that got smoked in the Big XII Championship game and then had to play in the Cotton Bowl while their arch rival won the Orange Bowl? Oh man, I'm still laughing about that one six months later.

bayareajhawk, that loss still stings, huh? Don't blame you. One consolation: it won't hurt as bad this year since you are used to it now.

That loss stopped stinging as soon as we got chosen for the Orange Bowl. Winning the Orange Bowl sure didn't hurt. And then winning our fifth basketball National Championship felt pretty good too. You can beat us every year for the next decade but you won't ever win a BCS game and you sure as hell aren't going to win a National Championship in basketball. That's my consolation.

"As for being 'unbiased' - whether the 'jounalists' at the LJW want to believe it or not, the purpose of the hometown sports department of a college town is NOT to be unbiased. The ONLY reason that most people read/subscribe is for info on KU (and they don't want it to be negative)."Kackley summed it up best when he said, "Some of you guys are just plain idiots." That word would certainly apply to Hawksj. Unlike you, Hawksj, I for one do NOT want to read nothing but treacly, glowing praise of KU not matter WHAT they do. I LIKE it when reporters are unbiased and tell me what's going on. I WANT to know the truth. Apparently people like you just can't HANDLE the truth. Now go root for the White Sox so you can get idiots like Ken Harrelson cheering on your team as they "broadcast" the games."bayareajhawk, that loss still stings, huh? Don't blame you. One consolation: it won't hurt as bad this year since you are used to it now."We really should take bugmenot's comments seriously. After all, no one know more about losing and underachieving than Misuse fans. Clearly he knows what he's talking about, since the little tiggerites are used to having NEVER been to a Final Four. I guess the pain of your school having never accomplished a single thing of any value in sports gets a little easier to take after a while, huh bugmenot?Unlike the many closed-minded buffoons on here, I found this article amusing and like the way that Dugan is introducing himself. I also agree with LAJayhawk about the reference being to the Stones song; it would certainly fit with the tone in the rest of the article. Welcome to Jayhawkland, Mr. Arnett.

Hey Mizzou dude,Welcome. Don't mind the rabble. Come on folks, give the guy a chance. I thought his intro was well done. Next week, THEN rip his head off! Until he does something to offend you other than graduate from a prestigious School of Journalism that happens to be on the wrong side of the Great Divide, lighten up! Frankly it's a little beneath our fine University. Do NONE of you have a friend or relative that went to MU? Dude's from Blue Springs, not exactly deep in in the heart of Mizzourah. Probably went there for the affordable tuition as well as the good J-shcool. Or didn't get in to KU.Fellow Jayhawks, let's not make ourselves out to be lunatics. As for Doogie, just be careful not to unneccesarily antagonize the crew. Do a good job and don't jab anybody with that pointed MU stick, and you'll be fine. Welcome.

Doog, so long as you remain funny and self-effacing, I will be willing to ignore (if not forgive) any certain educational history. Heck, even if you bring it up, but in an amusing manner, I'm in.Have you considered a column entitled "Running with the devil" or similar? I figure it'd go well with the title you picked today.G'luck man. I think this could be fun.
