Disgraced Houston hoops player got what he deserved

Apparently, Houston guard Aubrey Coleman thought stomping on the face of Arizona's Chase Budinger was funny. I wasn't laughing after I saw the replay. In case you missed it on Saturday night, Coleman was ejected from the game in Tucson, Ariz., for stomping on Budinger's face after being called for a charge. Here's the footage:The worst part of that video, to me at least, took place at the 32-second mark, when Coleman's teammates congratulated him with high fives and laughter on his way to the exits.Message to Coleman: That wasn't funny. You shouldn't be laughing after disgracing the game of basketball. You know what is funny, though? Houston led this game by 10 points with 52 seconds left and couldn't close it out. Arizona's Nic Wise hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to force overtime. Arizona went on to win, 96-90. Wise, coincidentally, is a Houston native. That's what I like to call Karma. Coleman deserved to be ejected. And Houston fittingly lost the game.I'll continue this blog entry with the first Sorrentino Scale of the hoops season. Still two undefeated teams in Big 12 Conference play. And wouldn't you know it? The defending national champs are one of them.

  • 1. Oklahoma (19-1, 5-0): Destruction of talented Baylor team makes Sooners a scary bunch.
  • 2. Kansas (15-4, 4-0): Jayhawks, winners of four straight and seven of eight, are playing their best ball of the season.
  • 3. Texas (14-4, 3-1): Can Damion James be as consistent as he was against A&M (28 points, seven boards) for the majority of the year?
  • 4. Missouri (17-3, 4-1): Only North Carolina has beaten teams by more than Missouri (20.2) has this season.
  • 5. Baylor (15-4, 3-2): Too many ill-advised outside shots against OU.
  • 6. Oklahoma State (13-5, 2-2): Cowboys have four guys that consistently shoot the three-ball at over 40 percent for the season.
  • 7. Nebraska (12-6, 2-3): Defense is there, offense isn't.
  • 8. Texas A&M (15-5, 1-4): Victims of a brutal schedule, and minimal offensive production.
  • 9. Iowa State (12-7, 1-3): Can you imagine if Craig Brackins had anyone around him who could score?
  • 10. Texas Tech (11-8, 1-3): Have lost four of five.
  • 11. Kansas State (12-7, 1-4): Have also lost four of five.
  • 12. Colorado (8-10, 0-4): Have lost seven of eight.
That's all for now, friends. As always, discuss.

that shouldn't ever happen, and he should have been kicked out of the game...suspension would be warranted as well.but AZ has basically stunk since they whipped us. probably won't make the tourney. not good.

Unfortunately, with Penders as the coach, there will likely be no sanction coming from the school... I hope to never see a Jayhawk behave that way... and if it did happen, I hope Coach Self would not "pull a Penders" and claim that it was unintentional.

Hey guys, I just saw an AP story on the wire about Coleman issuing an apology. Make what you will of these quotes:“I want to apologize to Chase Budinger for what happened Saturday night. I never meant to step on him,” Coleman said in a statement issued by the school. “I have never been in an incident like this before, and I have nothing but respect for him as a great player.“I love the game too much to do something like that intentionally. I want to say I am sorry from the bottom of my heart,” Coleman said. “I know that God knows what is in my heart, but I am hopeful that Chase will understand and forgive.”

If he really did not mean to step on him, my guess is that his reaction would have been significantly different. I don't believe one word of his phony apology... and I am no AZ fan.

he got a flagrant foul and was ejected just so the people who wonder why he didn't get ejected know he actually did.

if you watch replay in HD you can see him look down before he steps

You dont have to watch it in HD to see that....

Does anyone remember Clyde Lovellet stepping on a prone Missouri player Wilfred Willfong?

  9. Jaminrawk (anonymous) says…

He totally meant to do it. He knew where Budinger was. He also decided to "step over" him instead of go around him or wait for him to get up. He should be suspended for a least the next game but Tom Penders doesn't hold his teams accountable. No, he just gives out their grades to local radio stations.

Crap. While I don't condone this behavior, I would have loved to see Houston close the deal in this game. I don't want AZ in the tourney this year. I'd love to see their consecutive tourney appearance streak snapped (should have happened last year) so we can move into the #1 position. A Houston loss would have helped.

bking -- as soon as a young man puts a Missouri jersey on, he should have a stomp on the chest or head coming.

  12. bking (anonymous) says…

Phogfan86 says--as soon as a young man puts on a Missouri uniform--It would have been wiser to stomp on a man's chest in Lawrence than in Columbia.

ESPN reporting Coleman is suspended for a game. That seems a little light to me, but I'm no league commissioner.

Hey zissou, nice call. Here's the link: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/st...

zissour - I believe the NCAA has a rule that if you are ejected then you are automatically suspended for the next game.

Reminiscent of the Laettner chest stomp against Kentucky. I think my hatred of Duke started at that very moment as my hatred for UofH has now begun! I condemn all "body stomping" UNLESS the stompee is u of missouri.

  17. zissou (anonymous) says…

TXJyHwk, you're right. I just have a hard time believing that Bill Self (or any other coach worth his salt) wouldn't step in (no pun intended) and administer additional punishment. To me, there's a difference between being ejected for collecting two technical fouls and stepping on an opponent's face.
