After watching the Lakers-Rockets series this past few weeks, and the NBA Playoffs for the last six months, it dawned on me that if Aaron Brooks can not only start for one of the six best teams in the NBA, make significant contributions and help extend a series that should've been over in 5 games to 7 - there's absolutely no good reason Sherron Collins shouldn't get drafted in the first round next year...
This past season there were rumblings that Sherron wasn't a prototypical point guard, his college game wouldn't translate to the NBA and he just didn't have the size to compete... Sure, he did a lot of things well, but nothing outstanding - which might lead to him getting drafted in the 2nd Round and well, at the very worst, either riding NBA pine or heading overseas to play...
Forget all of that - Sherron Collins will be a first round draft pick and will enjoy a solid 10-12 year career in the NBA...
Aaron Brooks was drafted 26th overall in the 2007 Draft by the Rockets, didn't play much at all his rookie year and became the starting PG for the Rockets in Feb after they traded Rafer Alston to the Magic... Brooks left Oregon as a 4-year starter with 1511 career points, 471 career assists and lead the Pac-10 in scoring his Sr. year with 17 ppg... He never averaged more than 4.6 apg during his 4 years in Eugene...
Now, Sherron Collins has amassed 1330 pts and 391 assists through three seasons and averaged season highs in both points and assists this past season at 18.9 and 5 respectively... And that was while leading a batch of newcomers through Big-Time College Basketball where there was considerable pressure for the defending champions - because after all, it's KU - Sherron even said so himself...
Heading into his final year at KU, Sherron has the chance to win his second title in three years, will probably play weighing 190-195, he weighed 200 this past season, (Aaron Brooks is 6', 160 lbs in his 2nd year in the NBA) and while I don't think he'll reach 2000 career points, I believe his scoring will decrease slightly next season while his assists increase, thus it's not unreasonable to expect 15-17 ppg and 6-7 apg considering he'll get a little bit more help - at least he better...
So when the curtain closes on Sherron's career, he could leave as one of the most decorated KU players of all time and will go down as one of the fiercest KU competitors to ever run on to Naismith Court, I don't see how an NBA team - especially a team with plenty of veteran leadership - doesn't take a flier on Sherron Collins... If Aaron Brooks, who don't get me wrong, is a heck of a ballplayer, probably a little faster and quicker than Sherron but isn't near as strong nor as good a shooter coming out of college - can get drafted in the 1st Rd - while somehow Mario Chalmers slips to 35 and now 15-20 NBA teams are wondering what the hell they were thinking - I don't see how Sherron doesn't hear his name called by David Stern next June.
