Really had to dig for this one. Bear with me.Bill Self played at Okie State in 1982-3 the same year current Alabama Coach Mark Gottfried played one season at ORU before transferring to Alabama to play for Wimp Sanderson. Forget Wimp. I cannot determine if Self and Gottfried met that year, but Oklahoma basketball seems a very small world. Ken Hayes, who coached at Tulsa and NE Okie State was the coach of ORU the year Gottfried played there. Perhaps Hayes and Self's dad, a long time Oklahoma high school coach, knew each other once upon a time. Maybe it doesn't matter at all. Regardless, this was an awkward rebuilding period a coach or two after Ken Trickey's scandals.Hayes, reputedly an honest coach, lasted only a short time, and quickly fell out of the game and into oblivion. Forget Hayes.Moving on, Gottfried graduated Alabama and became an assistant at UCLA under Jim Harrick and then under Steve Lavin. Lavin you will recall was an assistant under Gene Keady at Purdue before moving to UCLA.Keady, born in Larned, KS, and a KSU player, was Eddie Sutton's assistant at Arkansas. This is another indirect Okie Baller connection for Gottfried. Sutton to Keady to Lavin to Gotffried.Gottfried leaves UCLA to become head coach of Murray State in 1995 and hires an assistant namedTevester Anderson from Georgia, where he was assisting Hugh Durham..Tevester Anderson had, at this point, finished assistant stints at Auburn under Sonny Smith (the Charles Barkely teams) and subsequently at Georgia under Hugh Durham. Durham was a long time southern coach who won over 600 games in a 45 year career, but by 1995 Durham was replaced by former Rick Pitino Assistant and then Tulsa head coach Tubby Smith. Smith apparently had no interest in retaining Tevester.Murray State assistant seems an odd sideways move for an assistant to make from Georgia, but sometimes these things happen to assistants after there head coach is let go. Tevester made a wise move it turns out, because Gottried was a fast tracker who quickly moved on from Murray State to his alma mater of Alabama.Tevester shortly became head coach of Murray State, lasted a short time, then jumped to Jackson State in Jackson, Mississippi, for reasons I did not discover.Maybe Tevester is considered one of the peripheral Okie Mafia?Or maybe every head coach likes to make headlines in Mississippi/Louisiana by playing a game with a team from there, because these states are productive recruiting regions historically? Either way, now you know a little more about Bill Self, the Okie Baller Mafia and about Tevester Anderson, too.! :-)
