Today's Chapel Hill Courrier-Inbred ran this remarkable front page photo of Dean Smith. KU grad and former UNC coach Dean Smith had a partial face transplant for reasons doctors declined to comment on. The picture, however, reveals that current UNC Coach Roy Williams was the donor for the partial transplant of his beloved mentor. Roy Williams was also unavailable for comment, though doctors say he is resting comfortably and choosing between Jerrod Haase's face and Rex Walter's face for his donor transplants. No word yet on who might be used as a donor for either of these two former KU greats and Williams proteges.

Funny. But....correct me if I'm wrong, Walters never spent time on any of Williams' staff. Although he would be listed as a disciple in the Roy Williams tree of coaching, Haase is the easy pick for the facial, being that he chose to transfer to KU after we pounded Cal in the tournament and a post-game locker room visit. Love at first sight for those two.Walters is my all-time favorite Jayhawk and I would hate to see him end up with half of Roy's face....the San Fransisco weather wouldn't allow it to heal properly I'm afraid.

kusarge,I wasn't sure about Walters, so I worded it the way I did to be flexible. How did Walters get his start? With Matt D at ND, or something?

Interestingly....first college coaching job @ Valpo under Homer Drew (2 years). Believe he worked at Blue Valley Northwest HS for one year prior to that.Caught on with Doherty at Florida Atlantic as assistant / associate head coach, then head coach. Also of note - coaching influences listed not only Williams, Doherty, as well as NBAers Chuck Daly, Pat Riley, and the master, Mr. Larry Brown. Hopefully he took more from Brown than Roy. No doubt he gets great exposure to the hack'n'slap being out in Cali as well.-Rock Chalk

Blue Valley NW certainly got their money's worth!Walters certainly has a fine array of mentors, but I worry that the one's he assisted lack any pull to get him good jobs. Playing for a coach sometimes, rarely ingratiates one with a coach in terms of becoming a coach later. They only look after you if they themselves ID you as potential coach material. Hope the UNC mafia looks after him, or that he comes back to KU and falls in with the Okie Ballers. He was a good guy.
