Incredible. Get him out of here! What an embarrassment. He should be gone before Monday, it'll be better for the players to play for themselves against Missery than let this joke of a D-I football coach continue this masquerade.

atlantabraves0731 8 years, 6 months ago

you guys are stupid. You have no idea what you're even talking about. The majority of those players aren't even his players. You give a coach 3-4 years to coach so he can put together his team. Yeah they should've won 5 games already. Those loses are the players' faults, not his. Shut up if you don't know what you're talking about

Jeff Coffman 8 years, 6 months ago

I'm sure Stoops, Saban, Myers said the same thing when they won National Championships within 2 years of taking over programs.

parrothead8 8 years, 6 months ago

Stoops, Saban, and Meyer (I assume you mean Urban Meyer...I don't know who "Myers" is) took over much better programs than Gill did. Nobody in their right mind believes that Kansas can get the same level of recruits as Oklahoma, Alabama, or Florida.

Jeff Coffman 8 years, 6 months ago

Check again their records before they arrived. Also, the point is, that they won with players that were not recruited.

Sorry about the typos...

You could go onto others as well that didn't win National Championships in their 1st/2nd years, but I would point out that each of those players took over programs where the coach had been fired and they were there to elevate the program.

flyingfinn 8 years, 6 months ago

And you're in lala land if you think this is all the players fault and by the way this is a place for everyone to post their opinion so shut your piehole

actorman 8 years, 6 months ago

You're right, atlantabraves. Anyone who thinks that KU shouldn't be dead last in the country in defensive points and yards (and practically on a record pace for both), no matter who the coach is and no matter whose players he's using, is an idiot.

And anyone who doesn't believe that KU should be getting consistently embarrassed week after week and be making no adjustments whatsoever is also a complete idiot.

Only you and a handful of fellow TG apologists are the brilliant ones; the rest of us clearly don't have the intelligence it takes to be allowed to post here.

John Brown 8 years, 6 months ago

And who has Gill recruited that is better those by Mangino? Ever heard of a coach named Bill Snyder? I heard something to the effect of him bringing life to a lifeless K-State program two times. There is this guy named Nick Saban who revived Alabama and won the National Championship in his second year.

Well Damn...its seems that better focus will fix everything. The Mizzou game is a lock now! What a way to send off A&M coach. I like Turner as a person and would want him to coach my son if he played high school ball, but he is above his pay grade right now. This really hurts, you don't lose like this over and over again.

Just amazing. Why bother with a presser? Just use this clip for every loss. He says the same thing every game. He's a broken record. Should-uh, could-uh, this, that and the other..ya, we have work to do...tough loss, time to regroup..LOL....

Can KU really fire a guy after two seasons? I am not saying Gill deserves to stay, but can a basketball school really fire a coach after two years?

Fans that think and use the words basketball school are part of the problem. Settling for this cr*p, not showing up to football games and only looking forward to basketball is part of the problem. Giving a completely in over his head coach another year is ridiculous. Do you think other schools would simply accept this because we are a "basketball school" ? Settling for this in football, volleyball, baseball heck even badminton is a huge part of the problem.

Hire Leach. He obviously can coach in the Big 12, has Texas recruiting ties and would create a national buzz that would totally jump start the program. The James kid allegations were all created to by the T tech administration to get him fired. Much like Mangino.

Jeff Coffman 8 years, 6 months ago

And as you point out, he was fired within a couple of days of when they owed him a huge retention bonus. This was a way to get out of paying the retention bonus and everyone knows it.

bjejayhawk69 8 years, 6 months ago

"part of the problem". If you can't figure out the coaching staff problems - well then go back to the basketball games and smile think everything is fine at our university.

kef104 8 years, 6 months ago

Before blaming the fans too much, blame the administration at KU for fostering Kansas being a basketball school. Students are REQUIRED to purchase season football tickets in order to buy basketball tickets. This demeans the value of the football experience. For students football has become a necessary itch and is not greatly valued. When those students graduate, they have the lingering memory of that itch and tend to not care about the football experience. Thus they do not support football as they might have had they chosen to buy football tickets as students. After a few decades, they general population is full of ex-students that were forced to pay for football tickets and never learned to care about or value the football experience. If the season sucks so what. At least they. and I, got to practice cheers so the basketball season gets off to a rocking start.

bjejayhawk69 8 years, 6 months ago

I don't care how or why people come to games. If you are a KU fan at least support the 2 revenues producing sports. The issue is football is driving conference realignment not basketball and football is the biggest sport revenue producer for a university. It funds most of the other sports. Bad football hurts every other sport and this case it could hurt basketball with conference realignment issues. I doubt if KU is only university that does this. Football tickets are more readily available and cheaper for students vs. basketball where KU has to maximize its basketball revenue since it continually screws up its football program.

The team shouldn't look totally out of their element and that's what it's looked like since the GT game. Expecting the team to win some of the the games could be too much but they should at least be competative and most of the time they don't even look that! It's not rocket science and the guy down the road doesn't seem to be having a problem with less than 5-star atheletes!!!

AS 8 years, 6 months ago

BC5, has a good point. Kansas has never been a football school!

hawksfanatic 8 years, 6 months ago

BC5 has a terrible point, and consequently, so do you - one that has gotten us into the trouble we are into today. Look at bjejayhawk69's post above for the real story.

Jeff Coffman 8 years, 6 months ago

Just listened to the clip, a few things that I would note: 1) "We were out coached", wow inspirational. 2) We weren't able to tackle, I guess that two hand touch in practice didn't teach those fundamentals. 3) "We need to come in with a better approach", really, because I thought the approach you have been taking all year long has been so successful. 4) We need to regroup and begin tomorrow.
5) We have one game left...I hope that means you are resigning after this game, but yep either way you are hitting the highway. I hear Penn State needs a coach to clean up their might even have a few ties out there as well.

squawkhawk 8 years, 6 months ago

"We were out coached." Seems like we hear this every week. What does that say when the head coach is consistently saying it?

Bring back Mangino. He made us into a "football school" I want our hawks to be respected August to April. Gill is a nice enough guy, and a great player, but he is proving to be well out of his league in big time college football.

squawkhawk 8 years, 6 months ago

One year does not make us a football school. Keep in mind MM had a losing record in the Big 12.

Jeff Coffman 8 years, 6 months ago

I'm not saying he was the best coach ever, but he got us to a bowl game 4 of 8 seasons and went 3-1 in the bowl games.

I don't think anyone is saying that we need to BCS champions every week, but we do need to be competitive and go to bowl games every other year.

anybody think we would be in a bowl game next year with Gill? If the answer is no, than why proceed?

They left the last part of TG's quote off of the video clip: "Other than being outplayed, outcoached and outclassed in every conceivable way, there were a lot of encouraging signs, especially the way we moved the ball on that last drive. I was pleased that we were able to avoid the shutout, and that really gives us momentum going into the next game. We just have to continue to believe. Believe, believe, believe. And if we keep believing, we can believe that we can play the same way for the entire game as we did for the last three minutes against aTm's eighth-string defense. The main thing is that we just have to believe. And that's what I'll be stressing in practice all week: believe."

Jeff Coffman 8 years, 6 months ago

You forget, that in grade school when you play against your friends, the person that scores last wins...that is huge for momentum.

RockCaCO3 8 years, 6 months ago

Wow, Texas had a tough a$$ schedule today, Missouri, then K-State in the same day.

sheahoRn 8 years, 6 months ago

Oh, we just didn't have the energy and didn't execute, that's all. I think that's enough to let Turner keep the corner office for another year.

RockCaCO3 8 years, 6 months ago

Some days, I just don't have the energy to go to work, or if at work, I just don't execute. Oh, no wait, I'd actually get fired if I did that.

Michael Leiker 8 years, 6 months ago

I don't know what people expect him to say after that. I've actually changed to where at this point I'm just extremely impressed with his ability to find something positive to build on every week and not just blow up. At least he has shown on the sidelines by some of his reactions that this is just killing him on the inside, he's shown some (do not read that to mean a lot) fire.

Given that, it's just not working. You can't talk about execution every week and then have snaps over the punters heads, problems in pre-snap action, false starts, missed assignments, etc. Simply put they are just not well drilled enough on their assignments.

One thing that continues to baffle me (along with the million other things) is how much time must we spend teaching 6 different guys how to read and run the read option as the snap receiver? The mis-allocation of practice time just seems glaring when you see what they come out with in the game plan every week.

namder 8 years, 6 months ago

Get it over with. Get out the axe. It doesn't matter if it's now or next week. The question should be is when the deep pockets that are going to finance the departure prefers the deed be done.

Jeff Coffman 8 years, 6 months ago

I'm hoping that they are building a case for incompetency, so they can fire him for cause, like in his contract.

CHEEZIT 8 years, 6 months ago

Go big or go home. The guy on channel 5 sports said go after Urban Meyer! Offer him 4 mil!!!! I about fell out of my chair. He should be fired for that ridiculous idea!!! People thought Katie was crazy???

Kirk 8 years, 6 months ago

Painful to watch, though not surprising in the least. But still painful.

Then again, Zenger's decision is really easy. He won't look bad nuking Gill. On the contrary, keeping Gill would be idiotic in almost everyone's eyes.

These types of statements to the press seal the deal: He has no bleeding idea how the eff to build a winning football team.

teemvee 8 years, 6 months ago

What we all need to realize is that whether or not you like him, firing Gill after this year would be stupid for a couple of reasons.

1) We are still paying Mangino, would have to pay Gill, AND somehow find the money for this amazing new coach everyone seems to want to hire.

2) We would be telling the new coach that we are only giving him two years, regardless of what his contract Is, to turn one of the worst programs in the country into a respectable one despite having mediocre players and one of the toughest schedules in the country from this year on out.

I think we all love KU and we all love KU football. The best thing for us to do us to show support for our team, program, and even coach right now because to be quite honest if I was a recruit or potential new head coach, KU does not interest me whatsoever right now. I'm not saying settle for being bad but at least try and support this program because the fans are just as important as the coach, players, and everyone else involved and right now we all leave at halftime if we even go to the games at all. I know we aren't playing well but from the player's point of view everyone quit on them so why should they still try? Whether that's right or wrong its probably the case so please, especially for this last game, go to it and cheer us on the best you possibly can.

Rock Chalk.

all_in 8 years, 6 months ago

Wow, I'm so impressed to hear a KU fan with understanding. You are one in a few hundred thousand that speak from the heart, opposed to those whom speak from the anus. I blogged a week or two ago about the same concern. I'm the parent of a recruit and I've been disgusted by the comments of the "die-hard" - "faithful" rock chalkers. Rome was not built in a day, but most KU fans that blog speak negatively and only want to "win now". Gill is owed 1 thing, the opportunity for his first recruited class, to hit the field as seniors. The seniors and juniors on today's team was not recruited by the Gill regime and he should not be so accountable for them.

jaymar74 8 years, 6 months ago

As far as the dollars, if Gill stays we have 15,000 less people buying tickets to each game next year. Thats about $750,000 less a game in revenue. Do the numbers.

Aaron Carpenter 8 years, 6 months ago

Really, you wouldn't take Urban Meyer are 4 mil a year? Perennial top 5 basketball team, then the most talked about hire in college football, ever!! He could build this program to Big 12 contender if not champion within 4 years. Obviously the money is there, but can we get someone great enough? These guys have BIG ego's, and this would be the finest stroke of all.

jayhawkeratheart 8 years, 6 months ago

From the onset, when the decision was made to wear nameless jerseys, the individualism of the player went out the door. At that point in time the players had nothing to gain by playing their hearts out, simply because no one knew who did what, unless you had a program guide in your hand. Probably the single most damaging move on the part of the coaches to make that decision. College sports is about who you are, and how good you are. Point to be made, put the names back on the jerseys so mom and dad can see their boys play and be proud. It's like we're afraid to bring recognition to any one player, for some odd reason. School pride is based on individual performances, and you tell me how long the "Basketball School" would last if you take away the identity of the players. Nuf said
