I hate it! That just made the old Allen Fieldhouse into a completely different building. Words can not express how saddened I am by this. I loved going to Allen when it felt like stepping back in time, into the 1950s. Those days are long gone. Allen Fieldhouse as we knew it is no more.
I understand how you feel Mutt, but recruits don't get sold on classic tradition and nostalgia, however impressive, these days. A long solid history may generate respect, but modern conveniences generate excitement and knowledge that KU is keeping up with all other universities. I think the old and new are blended very nicely myself.
Sorry Mutt, but I think you're just plain wrong on this one. I took the tour for Williams Fund donors this afternoon, and they have done a great job with these renovations. Most of what you see in this video is behind the scenes, and most of us will never get to see it again. Because so many of the offices were moved to the building on the west side of the fieldhouse, they were able to expand the area for the Booth Hall of Athletics.
The atmosphere of the public areas is not all that different, IMO.
On an unrelated note, did anyone else notice the sign at about the 45-second mark of the video that says "Player's Lounge"? Apparently it is a lounge for just one player. :)
Wow Mutt you think mixing old with new is a bad thing? Sorry but we hit this OUT of the park-wow. Phog Allen is smiling down not rolling over in his grave!
I see where Mutt is coming from but there is a lot of history at KU but we have also done some things recently that we need to flaunt for recruits and this is definitely how you do it...What an impressive building!
I think it looks awesome and I can't wait to see it. Definitely going to have to get tickets to an early game this year.
Although I will miss the old no-smoking signs with the gnarly-looking smoke, and the 1950s urinals that were big enough to bathe a small dog in, the updates were definitely needed. Every big game on TV this year, you will hear the announcers gushing over the new fieldhouse and before every commercial they will cut to shots of some part of it showing off the tradition of Kansas basketball.
As far as atmosphere in the stands, I just think they need to stop showing live play on the video screen and only use it for replays, multimedia, etc. That way people in the upper half will be a little more connected to the game instead of sitting back and casually watching like it's on TV.
I think the mural sucks.... i hate them because in 10 years it looks soooo dated and people will be looking at the fans in the pictures and saying stuff like look at that hair or look at that shirt. i like the actual stuff they improved like the concessions, and the national championships above the tunnel but the mural and that stuff is just going to look tacky in a few years.
.....and to be honest i was disappointed when they took out the track a few years ago. i loved that thing when i was a kid and it just made the place feel so cool and different. oh well.....
