Gary Bedore’s Kansas basketball notebook

We don't NEED anyone other than bill self.
I'm glad we get shots at recruits of this caliber, but we are going to be stacked for a run next year regardless.

KU coach Bill Self (Press Conferences & Post-Game Interviews)

Yeah theres no audio for this one for some reason...which is weird because the one for cole that was posted later does have audio.

Weighty issues

Ty Lawson would get domed by Sherron. Ty is maybe (MAYBE) slightly faster than sherron...but sherron is much stronger than lawson, has a much better three-point stroke, a much better pull-up game, and doesn't play in a transition game all the time that pumps his stats. Williams' system is like Mike D'Antoni's in the NBA - the stats are almost worthless because if you plug in any offensively talented player their stats get juiced up.Oh and did I mention Collins actually knows what defense is.

Little falls short

You guys are ridiculous.Just because brandon rush was able to come back from a leg injury and compete immediately means nothing. Little has no experience playing at this level or playing for KU. He's going to be slow to start with, especially until he is fully healed. But, that doesn't take away from the fact that we need his toughness on the wing, as well as his ability to score once he gets to game speed. All this stuff about making instant judgments on whether he will be useful to us is ridiculous. Let self make the decision, and try to sit back and enjoy a young team that will only get better.

Freshman Thomas shakes nerves

I think Thomas by far looked like he knew what he was supposed to be doing out of all of the freshman...he looked nervous but didn't force anything. He did have that terrible pass to Sherron but he seems like the kind of guy that'll have an impact in every game because of his energy. I don't think he's that much like D-Jack, but I think I'm starting to like him for the same reason - effort.

Keegan: Clock is ticking on Prince's tenure

Actually, Prince's new contract was signed specifically because it contains a very explicit buyout clause in case this season doesn't meet expectations. They basically signed him to the new contract so as not to harm recruiting, but made sure that they were giving themselves a way out as well. Pretty smart if you ask me.

Vegas prep Johnson feeling better after choosing KU

Hey jhawkdan, in response to your query about how brock knows whether EJ is an SG or PG, look up "elijah johnson" and read his profiles on scout.com and espn.com. Although he lists himself as a PG, that is because he is in high school and needs to have the ball in his hands each time they bring it down the court because that is whats best for his team. Both profiles state that his weaknesses are his lack of true pointguard mentality: although he has the handles for the position, he lacks the vision - at this point. Rest assured, a year or two here and it won't matter, but at this point although he plays PG in highschool his skillset is better suited to SG or combo guard - perfect for Self's "guards and forwards" strategy (as opposed to PG, SG, SF, PF, and C).

Paul Pierce was a pretty tough West Coast player...but I get your point anon. As for B-Rush, Wright, and Darrell being one-and-dones, B-Rush was the only consensus one-and-done, and he would have left except that he said he didn't want to leave after losing in the first round to Bradley. As for Shady and Juju, big men take longer to develop than guards and as such their chances of being able to be drafted highly after one year were pretty low, especially since our gameplay depends on our guards and their stats were not pumped by being primary scoring threats (a la Oden, Beasely, Durant, etc.). As such, I think that Henry and Wall are much more sure-fire one-and-done prospects than the aforementioned players, which is why I'm glad we got the players we did instead of any more "NBA-ready" players.

And sorry for the triple post, but I wanted to make sure to add that I know that Mario was a pg coming out of high school, but ended up being a combo guard here. Probably my favorite thing about self - you're a guard, or you're a forward, or you're a brandon rush. No pgs, sgs, or pfs and centers. Guards and Forwards. And B-Rush
