KU coach kinder, gentler

That comment was out of bounds, Strikeswso.

One thing about KU football--it may not be great football but it sure is really good soap opera!!!

Mangino's contract outlines probe

It's really a shame that Todd Reesing is going into a game in his hometown, that I would think he has been looking forward to since he arrived on campus, with all these distractions, rumors and investigations. We should have gone into this game with Texas as a focused, determined team to give it our best shot and if we don't win the game, at least we throw a big scare into Texas. Todd should have gone into the game like a pretty girl going to the biggest dance in her life; instead he is like the pretty girl going to the biggest dance in her life with mud all over her dress. Todd deserved better.

PS. If we're thinking about another coach. why not RC Slocum. He did a great job at Texas A&M, has strong ties to Texas high school coaches and he beat K-State for the Big XII championship.

Not-so-gentle reign

This situation with Coach Mangino is not new. Bud Moore (some of us that were on the Hill in the 70's remember him) was also abusive to his players and he was let go. If Coach Mangino is let go (and I'm not going to say whether he should or shouldn't be), I would hate to have an NFL coach as the next head coach. Except for Pete Carroll and, in earlier years Lou Holtz, NFL coaches haven't really worked out too well at the college level. Bill Callahan at Nebraska and Mike Sherman at Texas A&M readily come to mind.

Investigation of Mangino launched after player complains coach poked him

I agree with okiedave. A coaching merry-go-round isn't going to help the program be a consistent winner. Many coaches go through up and down seasons: Dean Smith and John Wooden (before the first national championship) in basketball; Walter Alston (former long term manager of the Dodgers) in baseball and Don Shula in football had their tough years. The owners stuck with them and it paid dividends. We need to support Mangino (even though he has called some boneheaded plays this year) for the long haul. We need stability in the program as much as talented players.

Game balls and Gassers

Todd deserves a game ball. He played with heart, took care of the ball and showed how tough he is after that hit to the head while laying on the ground. We saw a return to the Todd of old.

FINAL: KU's defense collapses late in 31-17 loss to Nebraska

The conspiracy theory (that the players are throwing the games because they are mad at Mangino for the way he handled the incidents with the basketball team) may have gained more merit after this game. Consider this: Mangino gets bonuses for the team's performance and going to bowl games--if the players throw the games, he doesn't get his bonuses so the players get their revenge; it is EASY to miss a tackle or let a running back out of your grasp and make it LOOK like you are trying to tackle them; it isn't hard to miss catching a pass; and, finally, the body language on the sideline says "we're just not that into football." I'm not convinced of the conspiracy theory but you do have to wonder.

FINAL: KU's defense collapses late in 31-17 loss to Nebraska

Mangino really blew this game. Until we went up in the game, there was no emotion, no excitement, nada. I've seen Nick Saban throw his headphones when a player does something stupid--like roughing the passer on third down. What does Mangino do? Nothing. Again, no emotion, no passion.

A senior moment

I don't really believe that the guys are throwing the games. It is ironic that the losing streak started at about the same time as the football/basketball incidents and I really, really believe that it is just irony. I wish the seniors the very best for the future and thank you for all the great games and thrills you have given us.

A senior moment

Does it occur to anyone else that this losing streak started shortly after the brawls with the basketball team? My theory is that the football players are mad at Mangino over the way he handled the incident and they are deliberately losing the games.

KU coughs it up

The coaching staff has absolutely missed not using Kerry Meier more effectively. Meier should be a run/pass threat as well as a receiving threat. What you do is put Meier in motion, hand it off to him on the end around and give him the option to pass if the defensive backs come up to stop the run. Run that play once (even if Meier keeps it or throws an incomplete pass), and the defense will start getting jittery if the play is run again; the second time it is ran, the handoff to Meier is faked and the QB either keeps it or throws it on the slant route to another receiver. Why the coaches have not put in that play is a deep mystery to me.
