Adolph Rupp was the greatest coach in UK history and one of the greatest in NCAA history. At the time of his mandatory retirement in 1972, he was the NCAA all-time leader in coaching wins.

Rupp coached teams appeared in 20 NCAA tournaments, advanced to the Final Four 6 times, and won the championship 4 times (1948, 1949, 1951, 1958). A Rupp coached UK team also won the NIT in 1946 while it was still considered prestigious.
