It's official: Les Miles becomes KU's next head football coach

There were several really weird moments where Miles is apparently blanking out during the Q & A, such as at 29:30 in the youtube video of the press conference. Perhaps he was this way at OSU and LSU? If so, I haven't seen any videos of it. Snarky and kooky, sure. At a loss for words for like 60 seconds, no.

I wish I could find his repeated apparent difficulties laughable.

During today's Q & A, Miles had several long, very long pauses in which he was evidently struggling to find the right word, or blanking out entirely perhaps. I found this rather disturbing, and it made me feel concerned for him. Was he always like this? I definitely wish him the best and hope he's okay.

Look at the 29:30 mark. This wasn't the only instance of apparent dementia:

Matt Tait: Beaty staying positive to the bitter end

Neat deal!

Matt Tait: Beaty staying positive to the bitter end

I like Beaty’s demeanor in how he’s handled the firing. But his brief tenure cannot be compared to those decades-long careers of coaches like Norm Stewart.

In one sense, programs benefit from a kind of free agency mentality. But to receive legend-worthy respect, ya gotta be able to stick around a while.

Matt Tait: Kansas dabbling with stronger crop of coaching candidates this time around

I get that, kind of a no brainer. I’m asking Tait for HIS rationale. Every candidate has his pros and cons, and not every one has the same desire to come to KU.

Matt says:

1. Miles looks most likely to be the guy.
2. Matt likes the idea of Miles being here more than he did two weeks ago. Ok. That’s interesting. Why?

I like those things about Miles too. But Matt is saying Miles is MOST likely. Why? I’m sure we can all invent arguments but I’m curious what his are. And...why does Miles seem more appealing than he did two weeks ago? Both points seem worth unpacking or providing rationale for.

I’m curious, why the bet on Miles being the guy? Not saying he isn’t. But, as you say, there are other good candidates. And what changed your mind, swaying you more in his favor?

Help! Clarity!

After flight to Colorado, KU AD Jeff Long remains in search of football coach

Actually, you're probably right about Calhoun. Although he does seem to dye his hair. But I can live with that. Air Force plays a tougher schedule than Army, for example. Along with some of the other names bouncing around, Calhoun would be a game changer for the program if he can build a staff and recruit. I know he can coach.

Really? A "great" hire? Doeren would be a "great" hire. So would Miles. So might Monken, Litrell, Leach and others. Calhoun looks to me more like an okay hire, much better than anyone since Mangino -- but not "great" enough to drag our butts out of this stink hole soon enough.
