Why did Ben "need to meet with people"? Would it somehow effect his draft stock? Would agents only agree to represent him if he met with them before his college career was over? Did these people have insight regarding whether or not he should go pro that others did not?
I also think Ben's family couldn't wait six months for the gravy train to arrive.
All these people knew what benefits are permissible and which ones are not. One of the problems is that almost anyone can give or take money without it hurting them because the NCAA is the enforcer and the NCAA can only punish the school, not agents, family members or former players. See Reggie Bush and USC (though this is not nearly as egregious).
I heard he had chemestry issues with the team, much of it his fault. I think he could be a stop-gap measure for this year, like Randle would have been. But it could slow down the development of other players.
I think if his attitude was good and things gelled well with HCBS and the team he would contribute more than Traylor or Lucas. But I'm not sweating his descision one bit.
The only thing I disagree with is a top Big not being scared off. HCBS has a reputation for playing experience, even sometimes over quality. If a Top-50 Big wants to come here, he can, and he has reasonable shot at serious freshman minutes (especially if he's Top-20). But a guy who is on the fence may not feel so confident.
Randle could have proven Self will start OAD Bigs over other guys, but that can't happen now.
A top Big in the classes of '14 and '15 will be looking up at Ellis as an upperclassman and Embiid as a possible star. Then there is upperclassman Mickelson who was near-Top 50 out of high school. Also, Traylor and Lucas as more experienced. That's two qualities (Ellis & Embiid) and three quantities (Mickelson, Traylor & Lucas), with hopefully one of those three hitting.
I'm not complaining or saying I hope someone gets flushed, but I think it will be hard to land a Big next year and maybe even the year after that unless the guy really wants to come to KU and play for Self (and maybe even has a bit of patience).

Once again, HEM, you're the voice of reason. It is painfully obvious he has not done so yet. But shouldn't HCBS be telling him this instead of you?

Bill Self in favor of September (!) start
" If anything, they need more class time."
That made me giggle.

Basketball recruiting notebook: KU courts Memphis transfer Tarik Black
No they don't.
Most Final 4 teams are loaded with top-50 players. The others have juniors and seniors and great coaching.
Most NBA players were top-50 players. The rest have size and athleticism and bloomed later.
Did Rivals steal your girlfriend or something? You seem oddly angry at them.

I agree with two out of the three above comments and I'll let readers guess which ones.

Bill Self: OSU team to beat
Ellis + Traylor = ~ 35-40mpg (with Ellis getting at least 2/3 of those minutes)
