FINAL: Morris twins shine in KU's 94-44 victory over UCA
I dunno, jhwkfan, I prefer the red uniforms to stay in the closet for all but rare occasions. As one who grew up in the Big Eight days, I still associate red with all the okie and husker fans who used to turn Memorial Stadium into another of their home games, just as Jayhawk fans turn Coors Event Center into Phog Allen West when we play there.

Giddens reacts to fight
To rockchalk1990, westtexjahawk, njjayhawk and others who consider this story a waste: Just what exactly is being wasted? Limited newpaper space? Precious ink? Rockchalk1990, as a normal human being, I'm willing to bet that, like me, you've spent a lot of more useless 2-second increments of your life. If not, maybe you're up for sainthood, or on the cusp of being the next Bill Gates, and all the rest of us 2-second time-wasters just haven't heard of you yet.
The point I'm trying to get to here is that the value of the Internet is in giving readers an unlimited amount of information from which to choose to read. Read it if you want, don't if you don't. Complaining about the information being there in the first place is pointless. Besides, as a Boston-area Jayhawk, I am interested in what JR has to say, even though I think the Celtics picking him over Mario was a painfully bad mistake. I'm also kind of pleased that JR sounds like a reasonably mature person, even if he doesn't have the ball-hawking skills of Super Mario.
I don't think the LJW, ESPN, or anybody else has overplayed the story of the running riot between Jayhawk football and basketball players. It happened, and should be reported. The news may hurt recruiting, but on the other hand the coaches and administration seem to be doing what they can to make sure the feud stops. I'm also not particularly ashamed by the behavior of a handful of high-testosterone twenty-year-olds still learning that their athletic abilities have made them public figures. They are in school for an education, after all. Going back to JR, he seems to have learned at least something during his time in Lawrence.
Most people in the world could not care less about the fights or the reporting of them. Those who do but are critical of the messenger should look up from their own navels long enough to see that the messengers are simply doing their job.

Buford not alone suffering at Camp
The species athleticus vomitus has a long, proud (though head-bowed) tradition. I recall a story about the one guy who could give Wilt a game -- Bill Russell -- who supposedly threw up before every playoff or championship game he ever played. As world champion at winning world championships, that was a lot of playoff games.
I recall a story, maybe made up but good anyway, about Red Auerbach finishing a pre-game speech with 'any questions?' Somebody answered 'we can't go out there now, Coach, because Russell hasn't puked yet!' Whereupon Russell went into the nearest bathroom stall, did what seemed to be necessary, and out they went to win another NBA championship.
Run your guts out boys, it's a long way to that first Monday in April.

You Decide, 2009: Whetter, Newell or Romary (Spodcasters)
This was a fun idea. My vote is for the Wetter Is Better All-Stars (as opposed to the other two all-star teams). By the end of the season, CJ Henry going as the No. 13 pick will look like Paul Pierce going as a No. 10, or Tom Brady going in the 6th round of the NFL draft. Besides being a professional-caliber athlete, CJ's 23 years old -- and Bill Self wanted him as a 19-year-old kid out of high school.
I also have high hopes for the other addition who isn't a part of Rivals.com's sixth best recruiting class of the year, Jeff Withey. Can't wait to see him play, especially if he goes hard core in the weight room from now until October. Anybody 6'10" who's quick and can run has got to be useful.

Jayhawk Flashback: Oklahoma State, 2/27/05
I agree with Rohdek -- Great job with these Jesse, and keep them coming. Perfect fodder as we await the assault on the 2010 National Championship.
These last two Flashbacks remind me of two games I'd love to see recapped. The first is the Great Eight game against Cincinnatti (or however it's spelled) when Paul Pierce was a sophomore. Cincy was ranked #2 in the country, KU somewhere around #15, and the first half ended with the Jayhawks down 19 points. Then Pierce showed his ability to take over a game. Finished with a stat line that wasn't overwhelming, but his second half shooting earned us the win. Maybe Ole Roy's speech at halftime helped as well.
The other game I'd like to see recapped is the KU/OSU game from '95. Big Country Reeves ended his regular season college career with a goose egg, but Rutherford set a three-point record against KU en route to scoring 45. KU got the win, but OSU went on to either the national championship final or semifinal, losing to champion UCLA.

KU’s Self wins AP coach of year
Congratulations to Coach Self!
Although this story is careful to specify that KU lost the five starters of the championship game, most writers don't give Self and staff enough credit when they say KU lost only five starters. When one looks at the season as a whole, not to mention the fast style of play that depends on frequent substitution over who the first five guys on the floor happen to be, one should note that we lost six starters: Chalmers, Robinson, Rush, Arthur, Jackson and Kaun.
All were essential to the season and the march to the title. I don't remember which five started the championship game, as that bit of information is useless trivia.

Turnovers plague KU
Here's a simple mathematical equation. Being the 333rd oldest team out of the 344 Division 1 teams in the nation equals a boatload of turnovers. They're talented, used to having everything work out in their favor, but are still learning that the guys wearing different colored jerseys are pretty good too.
Turnovers are a part of the learning curve. OK, it's already mid-February, time to grow up, but they can turn the corner in any one game. Keep in mind that everyone not named Aldrich or Collins played flat at best, mistake-prone at worst, but KU won by 17. Frankly, I wouldn't want to be in OU's shoes right now. The Jayhawks have a scary level of potential yet to be realized.

Of these three Jayhawks, which was your favorite to watch on the defensive end?
Darnell Valentine.

Twins impress Bears’ coach
A good solid win on the road. After a likely win against the Cowboys at Allen, the next test of freshman development are the back-to-back games in the state of misery and in the core of the rotten little apple. If they pass those tests, they have a decent shot at finishing 15-1 (maybe even better), and probably a share of the title. Unlike me, they just have to stay focused on each individual practice and game, and the potential will be realized.Just think of the schmucks in Columbia and Manhattan. Their national-championship-defending arch enemy is supposed to be rebuilding with no returning starters and a busload of freshman, yet the Jayhawks have the gall (not to mention talent, coaching and tradition) to contend again! Ha -- this is a thoroughly enjoyable season. They're gonna be dangerous dance partners in March. And as for Jaybate -- I do wonder what he does for his day job. Maybe he hit it big selling stock short and has retired. If you have the time to read everything, though, he usually seems to have some good information. If you don't have the time, just scroll on by.

KU has many weapons
Jaybate, good points and I'm sure accurate accounting. My assessment was more qualitative than quantitative. I know Phelps and Lewis were heavy favorities in most of their events, and probably the others were as well. They also were able to put up larger medal totals because they competed in more than one event. The "greatest competitor" tag applies to Oerter because he was not the favorite in three of his Olympics, had one shot at gold per Olympiad, and delivered.
