Downs was the first member of the class of 2005 to commit to the Jayhawks, annoucing his decision May 17, 2004, after visiting KU's campus the weekend before. He averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds as a junior at Bothell (Wash.) High, and earned first-team King County 4A honors in his first season at Bothell, averaging 19.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.

Downs, who chose KU over Duke and Gonzaga, also can play shooting guard, combining his height with solid long-range shooting skills to be deadly from the perimeter. His ability to play two positions will add even more versatility to a backcourt rotation can will feature Jeff Hawkins, J.R. Giddens, Alex Galindo, Russell Robinson and fellow signees Julian Wright, Roderick Stewart and Mario Chalmers.

Just before Christmas Day in 2004, Micah told The Seattle Times that he might enter the 2005 NBA Draft, but his father, Steve, later said that Micah would be attending Kansas unless he was guaranteed a multimillion dollar contract.

Born in Auburn, Wash., Downs spent his elementary years in Yakima, Wash. He moved to Mexico, Mo., in sixth grade when his maternal grandmother was sick. Because of his father's construction work, the family moved to Las Vegas, where Downs spent eighth, ninth and part of 10th grade.

But then his paternal grandfather fail ill, and the Downs moved to Butte, Mont., until the summer of 2003, when they settled back in the Seattle area.
