Probably the best all-around player coach Bill Self has signed since he took over the Jayhawks, Wright should be able to play any position other than center. He also is a standout defender.
He played point guard his junior year, averaging 10.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.9 blocks per game in leading his team to a 31.3 record and a runner-up finish in the state tournament.
Such selfless play has lowered his points-per-game averages, but there is no question that when the situation calls for it, he has no problem creating his own shot and scoring. He also spent long hours in the gym the summer before his senior season to develop his mid-range jumper, which, when combined with his already incredible court vision and an improved assertiveness, will make him very tough to defend.
Wright committed to KU over Illinois, Arizona and DePaul without a campus visit. He called coach Self with the news about a 15 minutes after an in-home visit beteween Wright and his mother, Gina, and Self and assistant coach Kurtis Townsend.
