KU's Releford eligible; twins waiting on clearance

On Thursday, one of the three missing pieces for the Kansas basketball team has been filled.

Travis Releford was deemed academically eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse on Thursday and participated in Kansas University's 2-hour, 20-minute season-opening, pre-Canada-trip basketball practice at Horejsi Center.

Fellow freshmen Marcus and Markieff Morris missed the session, however, as they continue waiting for what is expected to be a favorable ruling from the organization.

"We didn't hear anything today, so I'd assume it's day-to-day (in hearing from Clearinghouse)," coach Bill Self said. He indicated there was no way the twins would attend today's 6:45 a.m. practice. He remained hopeful they'd be cleared in time for an afternoon workout.

The twins were joined on KU's inactive list by junior Sherron Collins, who Self said "reported back in bad shape" following a three-week trip home to Chicago.

Self said he didn't know how much the 5-foot-11 Collins weighed, but "not 195," he cracked.

KU's sixth-year coach didn't hide his displeasure with Collins in a post-practice session with the media.

"Sherron will not practice for a while," Self said of the player coming off April 22 arthroscopic left knee surgery. "His conditioning isn't such where he can do that. I'd be surprised if he's able to do much at all this period (nine days of practice).

"He is a month behind where I thought he'd be at this stage," Self added. "He is just in bad shape. He didn't report back in condition.

"You can't take four months off (during required rehab), then just start practicing. It's a gradual process the doctors said he has to go through. Based on conditioning, he's not to that point. I don't know when he can (practice). Hopefully in the next week or so. I am not banking on it."

Self did not completely rule out Collins playing in the three games in Canada.

"Unless he makes a great recovery and our training staff and doctors feel comfortable putting him out there, he won't play," Self said.

Self said Collins was cleared to begin conditioning three to four weeks ago. At that time, Collins elected to return home instead of remaining in Lawrence. Apparently, he didn't do much working out back in the Windy City.

"I'm not throwing him under the bus because he's had a rough three to four months. It's not his fault he had surgery," Self said. "I expect more (out of him). A lot more."

He questioned whether Collins can be the team leader this season.

"I'd like him to become that," Self said, "but based on him not reporting back in shape, it doesn't go very far in him becoming that with me."

Collins will daily condition with KU's trainer and strength coach while the rest of the squad practices this week and next, Self said.

"We talked quite a bit (about Collins' conditioning) but not recently. There's no reason to talk now. He didn't live up to his end of the bargain," Self said of Collins staying in shape the past month.

Self's players trudged from Horejsi Center back to their Allen Fieldhouse locker room after a rough practice.

"We had a couple reasons to do some extra conditioning at the end of our easy workout. They (players) are probably not real pleased with me right now," Self said, indicating "guys have to take care of their responsibilities."

He wasn't specific.

"This was not based on what's been reported," he said of perhaps punishing the team for an alleged Airsoft BB gun shooting incident involving Markieff Morris last Saturday.

"I'm talking in general. We had a little slippage. We need to make sure we get their attention," the coach added.

He singled out sophomore Cole Aldrich as a bright spot. "You ask who would lead the team now, hands down Cole would be the guy," Self said.

¢ More on eligibiity: Self can understand the Clearinghouse taking time in deeming the Morris twins eligible.

"We are not a fall sport. They are busy getting all fall sports people taken care of," Self said.

"I knew this could happen. They took an unconventional path that a lot of kids take (in attending prep school). Sometimes when you take an unconventional path, going to multiple schools they (Clearinhouse) have to be extra cautious in matching everything up. I don't anticipate a problem.

"I thought it'd be done by now. Their criteria in looking at things I'd think would be the way our people look at it too. I don't know that to be fact. We're hopeful to get an answer tomorrow."

Of them missing practice, Self said: "Missing today didn't kill the twins. It won't kill them to miss more days. Certainly for the betterment of the team it'd be good to get them out here."

The twins cannot attend classes until cleared.

¢ Not guilty plea: Self on Markieff Morris' attorney on Thursday entering a not guilty plea denying his client fired an Airsoft BB gun out of his Jayhawker Towers apartment last Saturday.

"I don't know anything about it. There's probably more to the story than what was in the original (police) report without question," Self said. "It's not my place to say. He'll be punished (for having the BB gun in his room). I will certainly not answer questions from you guys every day on this situation."

I think Sherron reporting back in bad shape is the worst news yet, even more disappointing thatn the air gun incident. Thus guy was supposed to be the team leader, and he's so far from it that Coach is publicly questioning him. Reminds me a little of Chenowith leaving Lawrence for the summer following his breakout sophomore year and failing to work out. He was never the same...

"The twins cannot attend classes until cleared." - Nice!

So not only are they behind in team stuff, they are already behind on academics. I don't blame the clearinghouse process for this because it's the twins' fault. Lesson to the kiddos - GET YOUR S$%* DONE!!! Take care of business and the rewards will fall in your lap. That goes for you too Sherron.

Chicago_JHawk -

I agree with you. When Self starts calling you out publicly then you know it's not a good situation. I guess I thought he would've learned by now, especially since his weight has been an area of concern in the past too.

I remain hopeful that things will come together with these guys, but there's no denying that we've been reading plenty of stuff lately that we would rather not have to. Time will tell.

We may learn just how valuable Russell Robinson really was to KU last season.

Can't Self or someone get better information than the LJW has had given to it concerning the twin's eligibility? Think they will learn in time for the 2009-10 season?

I do agree with yates on the first comment. Robinson was indispensable. I still think he was the glue that held that team together. I also don't think Collins will be near the offensive weapon he was backing up Robinson. Teams will be able to set up against Collins now... he can't take them by suprise once they are a little worn down. Course, he has to be in shape to even try that!

Self will take care of business. But as a fan, I'm giving Sherron all the time he needs. It's got to be hard to get ready for a new season that has no potential of comparing to the previous season.

Coach is doing the right thing by shocking the team back into the right mindset. But for Sherron, he's basically starting over with a new team after standing on the mountain top. It's like saying "okay climb that impossible mountain again, but without your friends, and without the talent". That's hard. And it's going to take the coaching job of a lifetime to tap all of Collin's potential this year, and get a team to buy into similar goals as last year.

Besides, I'm still giddy from Sherron's own miracle in the championship game. That play was just as important as Mario's. Have we forgotten?

And saying that Collins reminds you a little of Chenowith is like saying Mike Tyson reminds you a little of Harry Potter. There is just no bridge to that gap.

KGphoto (anonymous) says...

And saying that RussRob was the glue is a little passe, don't you think? That team was a unit, every player as important as the next, and no other team in recent memory can say that as emphatically as KU can.

Sherron hasn't played his true role since arriving at Kansas because of the way the team panned out. Now he should be handling the ball, driving the lane and creating shots for other players. In that role, he is one of the best in the country. He doesn't need a set up guy.

KGPhoto: I have not forgotten Sherron's miraculous play. I also have not forgotten that this happens every year with him. The problem is this year he isn't going to be the spark plug off the bench. He will be a starter, and needs to be a leader. There is not a line on the NCAA bracket reserved for KU, despite what the KSU fans say. This is the toughest schedule Self has set up, and they are the "fattest" targets they have ever been.

KG - the thought of giving Collins a free pass for showing up out of shape simply because this season will be harder than last year is ridiculous. Suck it up! If he has trouble getting motivated because his "friends" are gone, then he'll be playing sixth man again. BTW, the comparison to Chenowith was half tongue-in-cheek. The parallels of the sophomore/junior year thing and the lack of summer conditioning made me mention it. Collins was prevented from conditioning for half the summer because of the surgery (the OTHER half was just laziness!). I recall Chenowith following Dave Matthews Band around all summer. Why anyone would want to do that is beyond me!

When you think about the leadership that last years team brought. The effort and everything that Rush and Arthur brought while recovering from injuries, and the improvement and conditioning by Jackson, Kaun, Stewart, Robinson, and Chalmers; all of these guys were exceptionally driven. Collins needs that same fire and Self is trying to get him there. All season last year we questioned Rush and Arthur's motivation and whether or not they brought their "A" game. But we shouldn't have to look any further than their speedy recoveries because of the drive they had in rehab. It just isn't there with Collins right now. Granted, his situaton is different coming off a national championship, but he has NBA aspirations for next April and that should has started as soon as he left the operating room. Sure he has a family (girlfriend and child) that he needs to see, but he CAN work out while he's visiting home...l

Self is a master in these situations. Remember when he was working to motivate Chalmers and he started Vinson in his place. He will start the guys that are the most dedicated to the team and he won't let potential get in the way of effort and teamwork. I can totally see Collins riding the pine if he doesn't demonstrate a commitment to the team. Given our incoming guards and the negative signal this sends to scouts, Collins might have just shot himself and his NBA dreams in the foot. I hope he will shape up and make us all forget this situation.

Awesome news on Aldrich. I met him last year in Lawrence. He was very friendly to my kids and is a bit of a favourite in our house. Good to hear that he is doing well.

By your rationale, Sherron should have just called it quits after last year, too. Lets just say I hate your rationale. 'This season's over before it has started, so Sherron shouldn't have to work hard. Sherron did his part winning the championship, so he shouldn't have to work hard.' You are basically saying Sherron shouldn't work as hard as he could and should basically be a quitter. And you'd understand and accept that?

That is the mentality of a loser. Losers dwell on the past... either victories or defeats. Whether you won or you lost, it is still in the past... the future is now... and winners realize that. In my book, you're basically calling Sherron a loser by saying he SHOULD be lazy and not work for next year.

It should NOT take the coaching job of a lifetime to tap Sherron's potential. Winners don't need coaching for motivation.... they need it for instruction. If Sherron needs the coaching job of a lifetime to keep the pounds off, then should we give all the credit for his huge play in the NC game to Self? How does that make any sense?

If Bill Self is confident that the Twins will be cleared soon, that's good enough for me. I'm not stressing that issue.

Nothing is stopping the Twins from STUDYING NOW on their own. They should be reading their books and getting as far ahead of that process as possible on their own. It certainly would be more productive than playing target practice. Never fall behind in class, and the work is so VERY much easier.

I wouldn't be giving Sherron a full pass because of surgery. Surgery didn't cause him to eat too many calories when his physical activity was lowered. I have little doubt that KU's trainer and/or dietician advised him that he needed to lower his food intake during his period of decreased physical activity post surgery.

His leg surgery didn't prevent him from performing upper body workouts EVER.

His leg surgery didn't prevent him from doing at least some exercizes for his body core.

I wonder if Sherron was cleared a long time ago for performing some limited workouts in a swimming pool?

I hope someone is telling Sherron that NBA scouts are watching him from afar, even during the off seasons.

EVERY NBA player gets injured at some point. Most players get at least a little dinged up EVERY SEASON. Teams put a premium on players that can get back into action quickly and EFFECTIVELY.

Sherron is showing a consistent pattern of not being able to take care of himself properly when he's not on the court. That reputation will seriously impact his future paychecks. It could easily cost him several million dollars.

The problem is that 215 or 220lbs (fat or muscle, but right now, my guess is that it is both, and Coach Self would like to see him lose the fat) put a ton of pressure on his knees.
I don't care if he is built like a brick wall. If he can't run up and down the court without huffing and puffing, he is not in shape, cardio-wise.

Disappointing to hear this about Sherron. What better example than the rehab of Rush. He has got to realize that to be sub-6ft and have any chance at any professional bball, he has to be exceptional. Period. There is also the what-have-you-done-lately phenomenon of how did he do after the Championship, or did he slide away, out of condition? Sitting on the pine on national TV while Reed and Releford run the team would be an image that he should desperately try to avoid! Cole will be SOLID this year. And about RussRob last year--what a tough kid. His quiet demeanor belied his strength. He did what many consider the unthinkable, by ditching his Mario-style slashing offense for the good of the team. VERY hard to replace not only his physical toughness, but more importantly his focus and drive. And his teammates knew all of this--thats why their high respect. That is why Roy Williams called RussRob the most important 7pts in college bball (what else is Russell "up to" while he gathers 7 pts?...). CAN YOU REPLACE THAT, MR. COLLINS???? Being overweight is a problem that never goes away. One is never cured. Ask Oprah.

It should surprise no one, certainly not Coach Self, sporting the gut he does from time to time, that Collins can't stay in shape.

Sherron came to KU having fathered a son back in Chicago.

Sherron came to KU with a weight problem.

Sherron is going to leave KU with a weight problem.

You want to rely on a guy with a weight problem to be a cornerstone of your team, you have to live with his weight problem, and his child out of wedlock, and his April court date.

He's always going to be playing himself back into condition.

Nobody beats a weight problem.

At best they learn to reduce how long they binge.

He's a terrific player. He's a gamer. Let's hope he can pull himself together again.

A chronic weight problem, plus a knee injury, plus an assault allegation and trial pending, would break a lot of persons I know.

Rock chalk, Sherron. You are a Kansas man. We are with you through fat and thin, through great plays and post surgery rehabs, through missed trial dates and pending trial dates. We're not going hope you avoid the truth, though, whatever it is. We're going to hope you find a way to correct any mistakes you made. We out here in the blogosphere have made our share of mistakes and paid some serious dues for them. We know you will too and we know you will have to pay up, too, if not for an allegation found false, then for something else at some other time of your life.

Don't let the lawyers get you down; either theirs or yours. Having to wait for court until next April may be good legal strategy, but it is bad for a person's insides, whether that person did it, or did not do it. Justice delayed is justice denied--either way.

But, Sherron, everyone faces times when it comes down so hard you need a hat. It is how you handle the awful times and cascading problems that determines whether you've got enough character to prevail. And believe me, Sherron, your character is the only thing that can get you through this sort of hail of crystallized excrement you're weathering.

Start the diet AGAIN. Start the rehab. Bring your son to Lawrence. He's more important than ANYTHING else. Work a night job if you have to to support him. Its been done before. If you assaulted the woman, pay your debt to society when the time comes. If you didn't assault her, love your enemy to save yourself. Above all, tape this quote from John Wooden on your mirror and read it every morning the next few years. "Do not let what you cannot do stop you from doing what you can."

If you can't stay thin, then you CAN get slim again and again and again.

No matter what, in five years all of this will be in the rear view mirror of your life. You will have endured a great crisis and moved on to a better time in your life. Other friends and acquaintances who seemed to have it so easy when you were struggling, they will run into their period of needing a hat. Life is a river. No one rides it without shooting some brutal rapids from time to time. Paddle harder now than you've ever paddled in your life, Sherron. It will save you. It will save your son until his time to shoot the rapids comes. Nothing else matters.

And I would advise the same to the person who has made the allegation against Sherron. This has to be an almost equally horrible time for her...waiting ANOTHER year for justice. But since she works for KU, or for Jayhawker Towers, she, too, is a Kansas person. Live strong, as Lance Armstrong would say. If Sherron did it, love your enemy to save your self, even as you seek justice. If Sherron did not do it, come clean, pay your debt to society. Finally, "Do not let what you cannot do keep you from doing what you can."

Whatever happened, neither of these persons lives should come undone, because of it. But because of the fragility of a human being both might perhaps be in some jeopardy of unravelling right now.

Hang in there, both of you.
