Hoops recruit Robinson to visit KU next month

Thomas Robinson, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound basketball power forward from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., tells Rivals.com he will make his official visit to Kansas University Sept. 19-20.

Robinson, who will visit Southern California on Sept. 13, also will visit Memphis, Miami and Texas. Thomas is Rivals.com's No. 82-rated player nationally.

Xavier Henry, 6-6 from Putnam City (Okla.) High, also will be on campus Sept. 20 for KU's football game against Sam Houston State and private ceremony in which the Jayhawks will receive their 2008 NCAA title rings.

A private ceremony to get their rings?????
I was at game 7 of the world series in '85 and opening day the following year in '86. I think that being at Opening Day after winning the world series was more exciting, seeing the Royals all lined up along the first base line getting their rings as the world series flag was raised in left field...all the while the world series trophy was at home plate....an experience that will NEVER be forgotten. Why on earth would ANYONE want the rings to be awarded at a PRIVATE ceremony????????

I'm surprised at that, too. Maybe it's because, unlilke the Royals, so many of the guys who will be getting rings are no longer on the team and may not even be able to attend. Still, I think it would be a blockbuster of a recruiting tool. It sounds like they are inviting the visiting recruits to the ceremony. Maybe in this case "private" just means "invitation only."

STL : Ah you crazy Cards fans. Still harboring hatred and denial that you were beat by a better team. You could have come back and won the next game, but it's easier to blame an ump for a blown call than face the facts...

KUF: Here are the numbers. Royals record was 91-71 (.567) and they had a run differential (runs scored vs. runs allowed) of 48. The Cardinals record was 101-61 (.623) and they had a run differential of 175. So if you really want to make the claim that the Royals were the better team you have to qualify it by saying they were the better team for 10 days in October with the help of Denkinger.

Enough Royals. It was 23 years ago. Now they're a AAAA team.

Robinson sounds like he's struggled in some of the summer league games this year....he's trying to show boat/take over games, etc.

....just early reports but egos like that spell trouble. SEE OJ MAYO.....who just didn't blend with USC last year because he had his own agenda.

X will see those rings and want one of his own!!!

STL - probably the best example of a team being mediocre during the regular season (83-78 / .516) and being the better team when it counted is the 2006 Cardinals. A rational person would think after winning that one, you would forget about being the second best team when it counted in 1985, 1987, and 2004.

Nice home series with the Brewers a few weeks ago by the way.

Tex - I have no problem acknowledging that the 2006 Cardinals were not the best team even though they did win the WS (which seems to transcend the level of complexity the average Royal fan is capable of grasping). And as you point out, given '85, '87 and '04, one could argue that if there is any justice in the world of sport '06 was not only inevitable, it was essential.

The Cardinals recent history somewhat parallels the the 'Hawks experiences over the past several years as they often fell to lesser teams (the Royals of college basketball) in March before claiming the championship this year. The BIG difference is KU was the best team this year - unlike STL in 2006.

Guys,

This is KUSports.com and not the place for you to discuss the '85 World Series. I am a little disappointed that this won't be a more public ceremony, but I have to say I think they know what they are doing.

Best thing to do would be to give the team their rings and move on with it. Past achievements give you no victories in the coming season. We can celebrate accolades and achievements all we want, but we have to also move on and look to this year and defending the National Championship.

dpu... give me a break.... i see no "rules" for posting comments that states getting slightly off-topic is strictly prohibited.

STLJ.... you cardinals fans never give up. Never mind that Orta was merely the leadoff hitter... that play was far from a clincher. Never mind the fact that STL missed an easy foul popup to Balboni, who then singled. Never mind that KC turned around and gave the out right back with a failed sac bunt attempt. Never mind that a STL passed ball moved the go ahead runner into scoring position. Never mind that there was still only one out when Iorg singled. Never mind that STL STILL had an opportunity to cut down the go ahead run. Never mind that even IF Orta was called out... KC probably ties the game that inning.

STL lost the series in 85. They bitched and whined themselves right out of that ninth inning and into a blowout in game seven. The fact Herzog and the team made such a big deal of it made it no surprise they got blasted.

Orta was the LEADOFF hitter - my point exactly! In game 6 no less! How far do you want to go back? The Royals has horrible luck in games 1 and 2 and sucked it up and won. The Cards had plenty of time in the 9th to make up for that call and still blew it, and then they had Tudor on the mound for game 7. Talk about a choke job. On the other hand, George Brett was 5-5 that game - that is how you win a WS.

Maybe Vince Coleman should have been checking his six for giant tarps rolling across the infield. Too bad.

KU's student population is made up of many people from both KC and STL, there are no KU sports in season right now, and people need to realize that there is more to a KU person than his/her allegiance to the 'hawks.

This is a sports board, and although I believe there should be no religion/politics discussed here, I see nothing wrong with KU people from across this great nation expressing their passion for whatever hometown teams they rooted for before making the best decision of their lives in coming to the hill.

I saw the banter back and forth as good natured ribbing back and forth between Jayhawks -- carry on, Rock Chalk and GO ROYALS!

I had no idea all the discussion I would create with the world series comparison, but it's all good fun...some counterpoints to some things brought up:

1- I know that a lot of players will be scattered all over, but I would think that they could all be at an early football game for a ring ceremony without interrupting their schedules.

2- To STLJHawk86 "The Call" you Cards fans still cry about had no bearing on the score, as the player called safe at first was thrown out on the bases after "the Call"

3- to rockchalk_dpu, I was not bringing up the '85 World series to discuss the series itself, but using it to compare methods of handing out championship rings, and the importance of doing it in front of the fans.

These boards are here for the exchange of ideas and opinions regarding information in the articles. It's all good fun, and shouldn't be taken TOO seriously. So let's have fun and get ready for a new year of Jayhawk success!

There's plenty of public celebrations. This probably give the coaches 1) an unique recruiting opportunity, 2) an opportunity to privately and officially thank the players and their families.

Eventhough I rarely watch MLB, I do secretly wish the Royals would do better. I did feel it a little harsh to call KU Basketball the "Royals of college basketball". Right now that is a slam against KU... Nothing against KC, but there is a MAJOR difference in expectations: Almost every year KU has at least a decent "shot" at making the Elite8 or Final4, while one cannot say the majority of Royals fans have that same expectation--NOT desire, but expectation and the subsequent shock if the team loses in the very first round of postseason, like KU did. Cant even expect the Royals to make the postseason most recent years. We will see what happens this year...
